OK guys, I know I am probably missing something flipping obvious, but I can't find it, so hoping someone can help. I have just moved from LR2 to LR3 and its determined to use up all my storage space and then some at this rate.

So, if I have a RAW file picture selected in LR and right click > edit in CS - its creating a Tiff file in the catalogue then opening to CS. Now my LR2 would open them in CS4 as a tiff but didnt actually try saving them and as soon as I selected to save in a different format, lets say for the sake of argument, jpg, the tiff would just disappear on closing it in CS. Its now giving me 3 different versions, the original NEF, a tiff and a jpg :bang: Oh yes, and its also taking bloody ages to open from LR3 to CS too, pressumably because its making and saving flippin enormous tiff files

Anyway of stopping this?

Oh, another thing that might be related - in old version, if I had a file set on a filter, for instance, lets say I made it 'red' - open in CS for edit, close and save to same location, but as a jpg or psd, or whatever, it would automatically show it again in the catalogue, also with the filter - new version doesn't show edited version at all, I have to re-import - again, infuriating.

Please please help :shake:

When the Edit splashscreen opens, have you got 'Stack with Original' ticked?

I've got a Chris Orweg DVD that you need to borrow btw!!

Yes you need to untick it, as that is what's creating the Tiff in your catalogue.

As for the rest, you have a PM...

Right, having got my catalogues all redone and ordered, I tried Marks suggestion but realised why it wasn't working - when I first open a picture from LR to CS, I don't actually get that splash screen. I only get it if I then try opening the tiff the 1st attempt created...so any more ideas anyone? :(

All I want is for it not to create an additional tiff file, I dont mind it opening as a tiff in CS, the old version did that and its no problem, but this autocreate/save business is driving me nuts :bang:

Try Edit -> Preferences

Then on the external editing pane make sure that the Edit in CS5 settings are:

File Format: PSD
Color Space: Profoto
Bit depth: 16 bits
Resolution: 300

I think your problem is that LR3 is using tiff as the intermediary file format.

Could be a daft question but why are you saving a different format when finished in Photoshop? If I do the edit is Ps option I then just hit save and go back to Lr where the Ps edited version is now showing. I would then export from Lr as a jpeg or whatever...otherwise I have no high quality version of my Ps edit...just the jpeg.

Fair question and when editing lots of stuff, like weddings, I use an automated system that does that, with psd's rather than tiffs, but yes, same thing. However, this is more for when doing one or two pics that are really just for sharing at websize, where having a large version is unnecessary and space wasting - just as an example, the pics of the dogs I posted yesterday on flickr - I dont want to save the edits as whopping great tiff files, backups take long enough as it is. I like keeping the original RAW files, [though wondering whether DNG's might be another option on that side of it] because I will often go back 6-12 mths later and edit again, differently. YES, I know, you think I am mad, but its become my way, and I just wondered if I had missed something obvious in the settings. I suspect I am going to have to adapt my methods to be different ;)

hehe fair enough :) The joy of Lr is that there any many ways of doing everything....and tbh the second point you mention about images loosing their colour tags and ratings etc is bugging me in Lr3 (also the way the Photomatix plugin doesn't put stuff in the collection the originals were in....cant remember if "edit in" does this or not) does bug me hugely....and I should probably so similar to you to reduce the amount of HDD space my pics take up. I so rarely back-up that it hadnt been an issue for me before, but as I SHOULD back up more I should probably worry more about image sizes :(

In LR3 this option uses the LR raw processing enging to render a pixel image copy of the original image, which it then adds to the catalog before opening it in the selected program (CS) - this is probably because the Camera raw plug-in contained in photoshop itself is out of date - it is saving a copy first as your version of CS and the plug-in is not compatible with LR3.

Try updating the plug-in within CS to one that is compatible with LR3 and "bingo"

Hope this helps
