I have just downloaded LR3 beta to see how well its supposed new noise reduction tools work. I have imported a load of NEF files but the Luminance Noise slider is always greyed out, consequently the exercise so far is pretty pointless. What am I doing wrong?

Nothing, the noise reduction sections of the beta are locked out at this stage and will be released in subsequent versions. :(

np. It's the only thing that's stopped me from playing with it, although I am interested in the enhanced vinyette control.

Thanks kalibre, I wanted to know if it was worth the wait or whether to get something like Noiseware.

I've actually found that the color noise reduction (which is available in the beta) is the one which is usually critical anyway. My experience of LR3 beta is that the noise reduction is better overall just using the color noise reduction than anything I could achieve with LR2 with both sliders available.

For a lot of images I've found that the LR3 beta color noise reduction itself does a sufficiently good job that I've all but abandoned the round trip to NoiseNinja for my high iso files.

(Nb. in case it makes a difference - and given the different noise characteristics of different sensors, it might - the files I've used are from a 5d Mark II)

Interesting to know as I use NoiseNinja currently. I'll be very impressed if LR3 can get almost the same result.

It does well on mild noise, but cant touch NoiseNinja when you start cleaning up files at ISO3200 and above on the D700. To be expected really - NoiseNinka themselves however are talking about a Lightroom pluging being available once LR3 goes on sale - that will make Noise processing far less arduous!
