Finally proper watermarking? Noise reduction will be interesting also

Installed and playing with it now.

New import dialog was confusing. Got easier once I clicked the little 'expand' arrow.

Auto tone seems to be a bit more subtle now. So far so good.

Hmm, better noise reduction sounds good, but watermarking I could already do with a plugin (which also allowed borders etc which still seem missing in v3). The flickr integration also sounds good, but again there is a plugin for Lr2 to do this very well.

Not as impressed as I thought I would be. Lr to Lr2 was a big jump, this seems like a job of filling in the bits they forgot before...whilst still forgetting some.
 
Watermark has a problem with text. Last character does not show. Had to add a space after the last letter.

Auto tone is maybe a bit too subtle.

You can use the beta until the release... then it stops working and you have to pay.

Annoyingly having bought LR2 I'll have to pay again too no doubt if I want to move to V3
 
Depending on the upgrade price, i'm not too sure there's anything ground breaking in this release, so may not be worth the upgrade.
 
I recall that there was a noticeable difference between LR2 beta and the final release - they had obviously taken on board feedback. So if there's anything on your wish list - now's the time!
 
Ohh good stuff will give me something to do at the weekend. Very interested in the noise reduction changes.

coincides lovely with my new 1.5TB external hdd arriving this morning (what Post office strike???).

Wonder how long to fill this one with photo stuff :)
 
just noticed the rendering process is much faster in 3.0 beta, always used to drive me mad waiting for the preview to be processed.

Yes.

Took a while to work out you have to right click a folder to exclude sub folders. i export to subfolders :(

Yes the import module works a bit different to LR2. Took me about 15 mins to figure out to show me the folders as a directory tree.

Like the new interface. The way unselected images are less prominent, and dupes are grayed over. Noise reduction looks much better. Wonder if its Adobe's own or "Bought in"
 
guys I can't get mine to import LR2's old catalogue am I missing something or is it a better way to just reimport the files (will I lose the edits and history?)

This download will install the Lightroom 3 beta and will work independently alongside your installation of Lightroom 1 or higher. The beta version is intended to provide an opportunity to give feedback and as such, does not read, upgrade or import catalogs from previous versions of Lightroom. If you currently own Lightroom, please continue to use Lightroom 1 or higher for your primary workflow needs.

^That makes sense, I'm only going to import a few personal projects into LR3Beta, if they remove some features you could end up with an unusable catalog. Beta software is a chance for people to test software and provide feedback, it isn't really the latest version which is an essential download.
 
Just been comparing side by side with LR2 64 bit and the sliders in 3 are MUCH more responsive, no sticky sliders at all... looks like there are a few changes 'under the hood'.
 
Never used Lightroom before, what happens if you make a catalogue but then decide to uninstall the programme?
 
catalogues are separate entities to the program and normally stored in the my pictures folder, when the lr2 beta finished you could import this into lr2 proper but not sure this time
 
Well, I'm seriously underwhelmed. So far I can't see a single reason for investing in it.
 
I was just considering getting Lightroom 2 and now the Beta of version 3 is released. Is it worth me waiting for the proper release of Lightroom 3 before I shell out 200 notes and using the beta version in the meantime? Can you learn to use an unfamiliar software off a beta release?
 
Lets hope there is a spangley student discount for this version too :) Got LR2 for £78

I think I'd stick with the beta v3 rather than pay out for v2.5 now, then have to pay the upgrade fee later. Currently beta3 has some bits that don't work, but I hope they'll be releasing further beta versions before the full one is out.
 
It seems to be much quicker than v2, must have done a lot of changes somewhere. I would have like to see a more customizable interface.
One huge simple improvement for dual screens is...
"Favorite sources can be added to the filmstrip source pop-up menu for quick access to specific collections or folders"
