Hi,

Thinking of buying Lightroom 2 and am a bit puzzled.

When you import the pics from the memory card does it copy them and keep the originals on the memory card? If so does it just copy them into the lightroom library so it doesnt touch the original?

If so and i imported the pics and then put the pics on the memory card to my backup drive. When i go through the files in lightroom and delete the ones i dont want will it automatically delete the ones i dont want from my backup location?

It will not know anything about the pics in the backup drive so will only delete the images in the location that you imported the files to
:)

The originals stay on the card until you delete them/format card (or like me put a nearly full memory card back in the camera and carry on shooting!:bonk:)

Lightroom wont touch any of the originals and no it wont delete the ones you dont want on your back up drive.

Lightroom doesnt actually touch the original when you edit them!!

I normally upload all from the card straight into lightroom, delete the crap and then back up to external drive. Wouldnt bother wasting disc space on pics I dont want.

Good luck buying! You should download the trial from adobe to give it a whirl.

So i would upload the files of my memory card to lightroom. (i can specify that all imported files go to the same folder cant i?

Then go through lightroom and delete the crap.

And then i can backup the whole folder that i import the files and wipe my memory card.

Does that sound about right?

When i backup how can i do it so it doesnt copy the files from my last import again?

Matt

Yup you can select a folder, make a new folder or put in sub folder when you upload.

Sounds about right!
Once up loaded an sorted, just back up the folder how ever you normally back up.

Do you mean so it doesnt back up photos you have previously imported and not the current import?

Lightroom is a pretty clever bit of kit!

When you upload files of your card you can choose to move them or copy them (copy is safest) to a folder, or folders of your choice (I put them in the folder structure year/YYYY-MM-DD) while it is doing this it can also copy them to a second location as a back up. You can also add meta data and even processing presets at this stage too.

I only wipe my cards just about as I am about to use them, that way it is a third copy of the files incase the worst happens, the other two being the keepers on my hard drive and the back up of every imported file on my back up drive.

My suggestion is to make us of the free 30 day trial, read up on some tutorials and see how you get on.

Do a selective back up so your only backing up the folder you want.

If you try to back up photos that you have already backed up windows/ os x would tell you that your over writing files.

How do you back up? You have any software or a copy and paste job?

Well i am about to buy a mac so was going to do it through timemachine if possible so it does it for me

Matt

Good man! :p

i'm still on os x 10.4 so not used time machine. I use a program called ibackup which is pretty handy.

been wanting one for a while and fed up of windows. installed the Windows 7 rc1 and tbh just think its like polishing a turd.

Matt

haha well you wont regret it! I've been playing with windoze 7 and found it better than vista but then again a trip to the dentist is more fun than vista!

when you thinking of buying a mac? the new os x is supposedly being released in the next couple of months!
