Hi Guys,

When I import pictures from the camera to Lightroom the previews all look really nice and light. Then one by one they go darker as if lightroom is doing some processing on them?

This happening on the library screen. They look nice and light when on the camera and when they first get into lightroom but within 30 seconds they have all been made darker :cuckoo:

Any ideas if it is just a setting I need to play with?

Thanks

The initial preview in LR is taken from the embedded preview in the raw file. When LR has applied the default settings to the actual raw data the preview is updated.

So its the default settings I need to change?

I have read about downloading a camera specific profile so I will try that and see if it works

It still won't stop the switch from embedded preview to the one LR generates. The camera lets you set contrast, saturation, etc. and these values are applied to the embedded preview but when LR reads the raw file they are ignored when it creates the new preview. The best example is shooting b+w, when LR first opens the files the previews are all mono but switch to colour when LR has read the raw data and re-created the preview.

The only way you can get consistent results is to use the raw s/w that comes with your camera - it should preserve all the same settings from the camera.

You could try and create a preset in LR that matches the default values from your camera and have it applied during import but I suspect it would be very hard to get an exact match.

Bear in mind that what's happening here isn't "wrong", it should happen. If LR didn't show you a preview until it had read the raw file you'd be unaware it was happening at all.

Ahhhhh ok, Well I assumed that the stuff that came with the camera would be fairly poor in comparison with the Adobe stuff :)

I will have a play around with some different software and report back :)

Unfortunately you don't say which camera you have but you may find video regarding camera profiles, at the following link, relevant to you in this matter:

Its a Nikon D60.

Im going to try Capture NX 2. See what results I get with that :)

As Lightroom is showing you the RAW picture after that 30 seconds I'd be inclined to think of it as Lightroom showing you the correct image and the camera showing you an edited version. Edited to the parameters for sharpening and contrast etc that you have set the camera to for making in camera jpegs.

When you import the files are you rendering standard prevews (or even 1:1)? If you are just using the preview embedded in the RAW file this will include the processing the camera would have done if it was a jpg.

I've downloaded the new profiles for LR2, but I've not had a chance to try them out yet, aparently it will mean that Lightroom/ACR render images the same as the Canon/Nikon programs...
