I played with the beta releases of Lightroom and saw today that the 1.0 trial was available for download. I'm getting a free copy as a RSP user so I downloaded to see if it had improved any.

I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised with the 1.0 release. The betas were quite slow but that's changed quite a bit and having had a good play I think I might end up using it almost exclusively. There really seems to be a lot of scope for emulating the way other raw converters work which can then be made a preset for future use. Worth a look I reckon... http://www.adobe.com

Do RSP users have to wait for notification for the free version or can we just download it? (as opposed to the trial version)
 
Trial can be upgraded by entering a key so I guess once that email arrives you just type it in and drop the trial status. Trial is 30day btw.
 
It's possibly the best software I've ever used for my photographs.

I have it set up to copy all my images to a secondary backup location, and use it soley for editing my pictures. No more photoshop for me!
 
ill probably try it, looks quite nice from the screenshots ive seen so could be good, i just hope it works more like RS and less like ACR did

Never used Aperture then? ;)

Lightroom is pretty good indeed. Was hard choosing which software package to use exclusively. In the end the only thing that clenched it was the fact that Aperture is integrated with all my Apple software. Which was a must due to the amount of presentations I do etc,..

A thought in the back of my mind has been thinking of getting Lightroom though.

Is there really any advantage in having a separate RAW converter when PSE 5 does the job really well and moves seamlessly on to the Editing work space afterwards ... :thinking:

Excuse my ignorance in these matters ... but is it really just simply a matter of two software packages doing what one already does ... :thinking: ... or is that over-simplifying somewhat ... :shrug:

I really cannot see the point ... :suspect:

Bearing in mind before I go any further, I haven't used Lightroom. I have to say :agree: with Ven. I used Adobe Camera Raw for my raw conversion and then one click and it opens the image into Photoshop for me to carry on editing. What would Lightroom give me over and above this process to justify the cost when Camera Raw does what it says on the tin :shrug:. Don't get me wrong, I'm not averse to paying for good software, especially if it will enhance what I do, I just can't see a "need" for Lightroom. Can I ask the guys who've been using it, are there some superb features that make it a "must have" bit of software over and above camera raw?
 
Grendal - if your using ACR and photoshop and it does all you want in your workflow, Lightroom will not have anything to offer. As it is the same raw conversion algorithems as ACR.
Lightroom will come into its own when third partys start producing their plugin modules, which can be slotted into the workflow system lightroom incoroprates, letting you build a custom workflow with it.
I have just finished looking at lightroom and will wait for future versions to mature the product, as the Raw conversion is not a patch on the Raw converter we use.

I have, and I think Lightroom is better. Its quicker, it exports metadata automatically unlike Aperture which only exports it when you export images, it does read my itunes library for slideshows, and its quicker!

I've got to add that, to be fair, if i hadn't bought RSP when i first went digital i wouldn't worry with Lightroom. That said, as RSP owners get LR1 for free, I'm not going to pass it up :)

Lightroom is a superb package for the following reasons :
  • Import images with META data and keywords for easy searching and filing.
    [*]Image flag rating system and filtering options to only show specific images you want to work on
    [*]Fast Raw image processing - The ability to edit hundreds or thousands of RAW (or JPEG) files quicker than anything else I've used.
    [*]Extensive editing options that are intuitive to use.
    [*]Output edited files to a custom web gallery.
    [*]Present edited files in a custom slideshow.
    [*]Print contact sheets from hundreds of RAW files in seconds - an amazing feature !!


I've always found Adobe Bridge to very slow and not user friendly. Lightroom will save me hours of time and the integrated slideshow has already impressed my customers :)

What suits you for commercial reasons will not suit others for non-commercial reasons. :shrug:

I agree its a good bit of kit and I enjoy using it - but it won't suit everyone and if my copy wasn't 'free' i probably would buy it.

For sure - Lightroom is aimed at Professional Photographers anyway but that's not to say others can't use it as well :)
 
Downloaded this last night. It certainly looks the part and appeared pretty swift browsing through my RAW collection over wireless (something that Bridge really struggled with).

Looking forward to having a proper fiddle with it tonight.

I don't have the money for an overpriced piece of eyecandy, just so I can use Aperture. But thanks!

Photoshop Lightroom is designed to run on Windows XP and although not yet certified for Windows Vista, Lightroom will run on the newer operating system. (CD/DVD burning technology is not functional on Windows Vista).

Caesura, what issues have you experienced? I only ran beta on XP so LR1 running on vista seems infinitely faster, I'd be interested in your specific issues.

I don't run Vista. Only OSX and XP and its fine on both.

Possibly just my 2 year old system. Vista generally runs slower, I can't multi-task with Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Firefox (15+ tabs) and Lightroom like I could with anything prior to Vista.

It's a shame, because I LOVE Vista. The operating system as a whole seems far more polished, much faster and more efficient to use (in terms of the layout, the ability to add/change meta data within explorer - I understand and appreciate the problems with it anyway). But I just can't stand things running so slow.

Oh and what made me downgrade was that coupled with the fact I don't have printer drivers support yet.

I've not seen it but I've heard it goes quite some way to offering PC users some of the things we "overpriced eyecandy" users enjoy with OSX. ;) :lol:

Lightroom is starting to sound good and while I know that having got the point where I'm starting to get used to Aperture, I shouldn't look. I know I will.

The amount of time these programs save me I don't mind spending another bunch of ££'s but I don't want to end up fliting between the two and not ever getting the most out of either.

Even leaf have changed the fundimentals of capture so that it can be adapted to PC.

either a good canon/nikon bashing or a good windows/rotten apple arguement:woot:


anyone seen the latest apple advert with the 2 blokes out of peepshow in it, the entire advert appears to be based around the core of "please please by an apple, we Arn't actually advertising any good reasons to buy one so erm, just buy one please"

I know but I've already changed all my computers once to run leaf capture and I'm not about to do it again. Having said that, I now use a dual boot mac anyway but I do prefer to work on the mac side of things.
