I always end up with completely black frames whenever I try lightning. I think you have to be fairly lucky in the UK to get a storm that is big enough and predictable enough to get into possition to get a shot of it
Its all about timing, you need to set your focus to infinity, a long shutter speed around 5 secs + sometimes upto 15-20. Then time the flashes of lightening if you can, give your cam good steady support, and ideally use a cable release/remote so you don't knock the camera. if you time it right you'll hit the button and the shutter will open for say 15 seconds the flash will happen sometime in those 15 seconds. The thing you have to do is just keep pressing away you'll maybe take 50-100 shots and only get half a dozen good ones. HTH
Timing is the key - count between thunder and lightning a few times, then you're set. As Glen says - have the cam set up and ready - a second before you think the lightning is about to strike, open the shutter and keep it open til it fades........ trial and error and highly painful. Haven't had a storm here that's been up to scratch for bleedin ages
