So I have just been at my parents and my dad fished out and ancient piece of equiptment, A minolta autometer iii.

Is it worth me trying to learn how to use this, I was thinking of using it to help with portrait stuff (using a nikon d7200, and 2 or 3 studio strobe flash lights.)

Only problem is the white dome that cover the light receiver is missing, but I'm sure I could find one on eBay if needed.

Many thanks

Ha, thanks Dave. My dad has never used a camera that is digital so its back from the days of film. Just stuck a battery in it and it works still, My dad was saying cause the dome is missing from the front instead of taking the reading in front of the subject I should point the light meter a the subject to get the reading? In which case it would be just like using the metering on my camera which is probably a little more sophisticated than this meter...

I have one of these (not used much since I went digital I must admit) but with the dome it will tell you a lot about metering and why an in camera meter is so fallible.

I guess it's not worth much so I would keep it and see if you can find a sphere (invacone) for it

PS and if it's a 111F which also meters flash then all the better

Just found this http://www.cameramanuals.org/minolta_pdf/minolta_autometer_iii.pdf

This is a great piece of equipment that will help you a lot in learning,
understanding, and executing light ratios in a studio set up. If working
tethered, it is less relevant since results are monitored on screen. The
more experience you have with your gear, the less you will need it.

Since I am using a flash and camera systems that can be remotely
controlled via the computer, I do find a real use for it studio.

I have one of these, works fine and does all I need.

One pointer, good idea to either remove the battery or insert a pece of paper betwen the terminals after use otherwise it will just discharge

Are Kenko ones the same or very similar to Minolta? Might they have spares?

The only Minolta one on Flea bay at present is a +2 EV example.
