Picked up my new HiLite at the weekend, had a mess about with it today, looks excellent, my only problem appears to be lighting the vinyl train, it looks very obvious.

I am using one flash unit inside the Hilite and one softbox in front, do I need additional lighting? I only had half an hour to play about with it, would upping the output of the softbox and lowering the one inside the Hilite make a difference?

Example Photo, please excuse the extreme disintrestedness of my son!!

Is a hilite one of those sort of big lightbox things by lastolite, for small space white bgd shots?

We use one at work and have 2 heads, one poking in each side. Your shot above isn't very blown, and looks like it needs more light. I've not used a train with it, but we do put a piece of white perspex in front of it as a 'floor' and the light bounces off that fine so that you don't get a hard edge.

Would increasing the power of the units in the Hilite not just excentuate the difference between the vinyl train and the background though? I can turn the flash unit in the Hilite up to blow more of the background, but do I also need to up the power of the softbox to blow the train?

The Hilite does what it says on the tin - until you put the train on it!

The train needs to be lit separately because it isn't being lit by the flash head(s) inside the Hilite and it's getting less light than the subject.

A Reflective umbrella, softbox or background reflector behind and to 1 side of the subject and set at the correct level of light output should do the trick.

There will of course be a forward/angled shadow of the legs or whatever, but that generally makes the shot look much better

Best of luck with the hi lite. I love it, but the repacking was mind boggling. :)

Thanks Garry, I'll give that a try.

I managed to fold it away no bother, don't see what all the fuss is about! ;)
