Lighting masterclass, 28th July

Sorry, I don’t know what happened there, it looks as if the PM didn’t go to anyone as it isn’t in my sent folder, so here is the information, as far as I can remember it, for those who are on the list only…

This event will be held at my studio on Sunday 28th July, we start at 10 a.m. and you should arrive soon after I arrive at 9.30 a.m. The models are booked until 5 p.m. but we may run a bit over that time, if I don’t upset them too much, and we can have a de-briefing and QA session at the end if anyone wants to stay a bit later anyway.
Tea/coffee will be available on a help yourself basis, as this is a free event I won’t have any staff here on kettle duty.

We will break for a short lunch at 1 p.m., there is a hot sandwich shop opposite my studio and the Co-op sells sandwiches and snacks too.

We’ll start off with a short intro talk, to explain the principles and my approach, then when we have a model ready we’ll see what we can do. What I broadly have in mind is to get some beauty headshots, cosmetic style shots, fashion shots, lingerie shots, that sort of thing. I have some of the SuperFast heads here, so we may do some movement shots and may even end up throwing water or something at the models, we’ll just see how we do for time.

My approach is always the same – I don’t have a clear plan, I just look at the model, her clothes etc and try to work out the kind of poses and lighting that will work, and emphasise her qualities, and do plenty of experimental shots. My shots tend to be lit simply, with one light doing 90% of the work and other lights used as needed, to add that something extra. As you would expect, I have everything here, from umbrellas and softboxes through to beauty dishes, Fresnel spot, focussing spot, so we won’t be restricted by equipment.

I will be taking the shots, and as far as possible will be giving a running commentary. Feel free to interrupt and ask questions, that’s what it’s all about. And bring a camera too, there should be plenty of opportunity for other people to take shots too, after all we have two models and enough space and lighting. Any camera will do as long as we can plug a radio trigger into a standard hotshoe and it can run on manual.

My plan is to use some of the shots in future lighting tutorials on the Lencarta blog. So feel free to take “stepback” shots that can be used, and/or to shoot video.
If I have your email address I will later send you my photos via Dropbox, and if you feel like retouching them, please feel free

If for any reason you can’t make it please let me know ASAP, as there is a reserve list and someone else can take your place.

The address:
Commercial Photography
1A Mill Street
Wibsey
Bradford BD6 3BQ.

It’s a side road off of Beacon Road, there’s a Co-op on the corner and we’re the first door on the left. Please park in Mill Street, do NOT park in the little unsurfaced private road opposite, some of the people there don’t like it, and don’t park in the little area immediately opposite there either, it’s a loading bay belonging to the Co-op and they have 26 ton lorries reversing into it…

It will be an informal, disorganised type of day, and it should be fun as well as useful.

Am gutted to be missing this. Unfortunately there it's the same day as a works BBQ. I asked my wife if I could miss it but she said that as I'd organised it and it was at our house, it might be deemed poor form :naughty:

Thanks Garry, looking forward to this, and looking forward to finally meeting Phil V too

There's nothing at all interesting about me. In fact Daryls description of an overweight middle aged wedding photographer is resoundingly accurate.

I'm a borderline caricature.

But I'm looking forward to meeting you and Garry and I'd have liked Shaheed to have turned up, he always seems an absolute gent.

I'm really looking forward to it, it's always good to meet fellow photographers, and its a while since I was on any lighting course

well that will be two of us then....

Should be a really fun day, the sort I tend to learn from much better than reading a book or just watching a video.

That's very kind of you to say - the feeling's mutual

I've never done any courses so this would have been good!

Having briefly met Garry and from the sage advice he gives on here, I've no doubt that this is going to be a roaring success. I'll look forward to the pics/blog.

Don't knock yourself, someone has to do wedding photography:exit:

I hope I don't dissapoint, Shaheed is a gent, cultured, educated and charming. I'm just a hack photographer

I am gutted that I've missed this Garry.

Know the waiting list is long, but could I still please express my interest for this or future events.

Can very well do short notices as not very far from Bradford :-)

Good news for someone, but not happy!!

I've got to pull out of the master class :(

Rob!

Thanks for letting me know. The first name on the reserve list is Toxic, so let's see whether Toxic still wants it...

I most certainly do!

And now looking forward to it...... How would you like a one off designer latex dress to test your skills Garry?

not sure he'd want to wear it - also we don't have a forum that would allow that 'pic'...

Right, that's settled then.

Not sure about the dress, will it suit me?

It should be a good challenge, both of our models are size 8/10, or so they claim

So sorry to hear that Rob ;) I'm still up for this as 2nd reserve Gary if 1st can't make it.

Andy, you can come too if you want, someone else may not turn up - and even if everyone turns up, 15 people, 16 people, not a lot of difference...

Thank you Gary I would love to come along and will arrange digs now. If you could pm me an address and post code I'll see you there.
All details are in post 42

I doubt it would fit but it does stretch a bit!

It is an 8/10 so I'll bring it along.

Hi Garry,

Not sure if I am 3rd on the list, but would you please let me know if anyone else drops out.

Notice as late as late Saturday night will do :-)

Thanks,
Anand.

Garry, as the random woman of this gathering [bar the models] can I ask a really mundane but hugely important question - will there be enough mugs/cups/plastic throwaways for us all to have coffee/tea at once? ONly asking because I ma packing now and just added a tub of coffeemate, when it occurred to me there will be a lot of thirsty people around :D

I'm planning to get some disposable plastic cups, so we should be OK.

Random woman... I like it

Have fun everyone and post some shots please

Hi Garry, it pains me to say this but I'm going to have to pull out of this class due to last minute work commitments. Really annoyed but not a lot I can do. I'm sure my miss fortune has just made some else's day though.

Shutterwork, a place for you if you want it...

What a brilliant idea this is - I hope it goes well and that there may be another one at some stag, even though the drive to and from Cornwall would be a bit of a drag..!

So here I am sitting in birch services waiting for the torrential downpour to ease off. Had a fantastic day with Garry and everyone eelse. Informative and inspiring - mug of water anyone?

 glad you chad fun :) but is we gonna see some pixels glued together like a painting :D

Well, it was only a small mug of water...

Brilliant day had and good to watch a master in action! Nice to put some faces to forum members too!

Thanks Garry for the valued lessons and taking the time to put this class on!

Now.....off to the lencarta website to see what I want to buy lol!
