Hi all, I will be running my last Lighting Fundamentals course on Sunday, October the 23rd at Queen Elizabeth Country Park in Petersfield, Hampshire.

This is the last course I will run this year, and I hope to restart the courses again next summer.

The Lighting Fundamentals course is designed to teach you the fundamentals of utilising different forms of natural and artificial light to create really compelling photographs. The course is aimed at anyone wishing to understand how to light a subject correctly and use portable and studio flashes. I will teach you how to setup your camera and lights in fully manual modes so that you can take control of your lighting environment and the subject.

You will learn how to use natural ambient light, use your flashes off camera, manipulate and control light and create advanced lighting setups to fully realise your creative potential.

The course is a practical and hands on course so you will be taking photos both indoor and outdoors and reviewing the results with me, your trainer. We will be covering a wide variety of lighting setups and you will be shooting lots of different styles of shot over the day.

Everyone I have trained on this course has had a fun day, full of practical sessions and has come away knowing how to shoot a variety of shots and create simple and effective lighting setups.

We will cover the following topics over the course duration:

Camera control:
Using aperture, shutter and ISO
Shooting in full manual
Metering for different lighting
Balancing exposure
Reading a histogram

Understanding Light:
The inverse square law
Controlling ambient light
Controlling flash light
Balancing ambient and artifical lighting

Portable and studio flashes:
Using on camera flash
Using speedlights on camera
Using speedlights off camera
Using studio flashes and triggers
Modifying light using reflectors, gels, snoots, grids, softboxes and dishes etc.

Anyone wanting more information on this course, or my other workshops, please visit my website at http://www.shutterbugtraining.co.uk

Spaces on this course are limited to 8 people, so please PM me or reply here to book a place as traditionally, these courses fill quickly.
The cost of the course is £85 and runs from 9.45am to approx 5.30pm

Many members of TP have been on my courses and the feedback has been nothing but positive, so please feel free to check out some of the testimonials from other TP'ers here.

The thread for the last course is here

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to ask away :)

Hi James,

I attended your Photography Fundamentals course on Sunday with my friend Penny. You explained things in a way that we could easily understand and take in, so much so that I feel confident enough to join in on your lighting fundamentals course on 23rd October. So please can you put my name on the list.

Thanks

Sharon

I attended one of these courses couple of months ago and found it really worthwhile. I was dreading the bit about inverse square law as I'm a bit dense when it comes to absorbing technical information:D However, James made it very simple and I came away with a much better understanding of how to use flash on and off camera.

Well worth the money and the drive from Essex!

James, do you assume a level of pre existing knowledge and what kit are you expected to bring with you?

Thanks

Anybody thinking of doing this course I recommend it. I recommended James’s photography fundamentals course to a lady I work with and she loved it and I think she’s joining this course as well. Her words were ‘James is a dude’

James has a great teaching style and can put things into simple terms and follows what he is teaching with examples to help you understand the fundamentals of using on and off camera lighting. With no question being too stupid or basic I felt at ease asking questions, of which I had plenty.

Before I went on the lighting course I had never used a flash either on or off camera, after the day everything seemed to click into place. I now have 2 flashes, stands, brollys, triggers, reflectors, gels!! and I love playing with the light and I have a better understanding of what I am doing with it (although I am still learning but that’s the fun of it)

James makes a difficult subject make sense and I am sure you will enjoy the day, in fact I am waiting for when James does an intermediate course or his portrait course and I will be on it.

Sign up, learn and enjoy I am sure you will get a lot out of it.

I was also on James's Photography Fundamentals course yesterday. I've been shooting with SLRs for the best part of 20 years and thought I had a good understanding of the basics so hadn't bothered with training up to now.

I'm so glad I went on that course though. James's presentation is relaxed and informative, easy to follow and in addition to all the information he provides, I had a couple of proper revelations that I just hadn't realised before, thanks to the way James explains them. I left that course confident that my photography is going to improve, it was some of the best money I've spent on photography!

I've already signed up for this lighting course. Just remember to turn up on the right day - I almost didn't yesterday ... :$

Thank you all so much for the kind comments, its great to know that you are all getting so much from the courses :D

For those of you that have already signed up on the course, we are going to have a blast. I have thought of some really cool things we can do as I want my last course of the year to go out on a high :D

@Paul

I would say that a basic knowledge of exposure would be a minimum and if you know how to expose an image using manual mode and understand iso, shutter speed and aperture then you will be fine :) (the theory for lighting will be covered so don't worry too much about any prior knowledge).

Also, you don't need any kit apart from your camera and a lens of your choice. I will provide everything you need, but feel free to bring whatever stuff you have if you feel comfortable working with it

I have never had someone attend the course that hasn't been able to follow the teaching, so don't worry too much about it :)

I went on this course a couple of months ago. It was really useful and I can highly recommend it.

I had no understanding of flash or lighting before I went, but James explained everything in very simple terms. Now I feel I can take my photography to a new level with more light to play with and an understanding of how to control it

Thanks Jenny :) I hope you are still out there enjoying your camera :D

Well, the uptake has been faster than I anticipated! There are now only 3 spaces left already!

Just sent off a message to you requesting a place on this course:) Hope there is still room!

Thanks James for a fantastic day I learnt so much. Equipment now ordered as I want to keep practising. You made it so much easier to learn than what I thought it would be.
