Hi all, I will be running my Lighting Fundamentals course on Sunday, August the 21st at Queen Elizabeth Country Park in Petersfield, Hampshire.

The Lighting Fundamentals course is designed to teach you the fundamentals of utilising different forms of natural and artificial light to create really compelling photographs. The course is aimed at anyone wishing to understand how to light a subject correctly and use portable and studio flashes. I will teach you how to setup your camera and lights in fully manual modes so that you can take control of your lighting environment and the subject.

You will learn how to use natural ambient light, use your flashes off camera, manipulate and control light and create advanced lighting setups to fully realise your creative potential.

The course is a practical and hands on course so you will be taking photos both indoor and outdoors and reviewing the results with me, your trainer.

We will cover the following topics over the course duration:

Camera control:
Using aperture, shutter and ISO
Shooting in full manual
Metering for different lighting
Balancing exposure
Reading a histogram

Understanding Light:
The inverse square law
Controlling ambient light
Controlling flash light
Balancing ambient and artifical lighting

Portable and studio flashes:
Using on camera flash
Using speedlights on camera
Using speedlights off camera
Using studio flashes and triggers
Modifying light using snoots, grids, softboxes and dishes etc.

I can highly recommend James' courses having just done the same course on Sunday! Absolutely brilliant!!

I didn't feel a complete numpty, learnt lots, and you get hands on experience and advice as to what lighting equipment you should consider buying in future.

I'll definitely be attending a portrait course later on in the year!

I have received a lovely email from one of the delegates on my last lighting workshop.

Hi James,

I just wanted to email you to let you know how much your course has helped me.

Yesterday, I really wanted to try putting some of the things you taught into practice. I had a spare 10 minutes after work so picked a flower from the garden, which happened to be the only thing flowering. I don’t have any of the kit that you recommended yet (softboxes or remote triggers, etc) so I had to make do with my speedlight attached to the camera. I was very pleased with the result. In fact, last year at around this time I took a horrible photo of the same flower. I thought it would be interesting to show you the difference between the two. See the attachments, last_year.jpg and yesterday.jpg. Quite a dramatic difference!

Today, I thought I would give the badgers a try, still with only the speedlight on the camera but with a piece of white card attached. See today.jpg. Yes, I know the shadows are a bit harsh and I should have been much lower down to take the shot but I can assure you that last week there is no way that I could have taken a picture as good as that. I did virtually no PP on this shot.

My monitor is not calibrated so I have no idea how these photos will look on your screen, but I just thought I would let you know that you have a very satisfied customer and if you need a recommendation any time, just let me know.

Can’t wait to get a softbox and remote triggers!

All the best,

Jenny

Its always nice to know that people are getting a lot out of my one day courses :)

Places are booking up so if you wish to reserve a place, please get in touch.
This may well also be the penultimate course this year, as I think the October course will be the last due to a couple of impending commissions overseas.

So, if you cannot make the October date this may well be your last chance this year.

Really looking forward to this course tomorrow

I brought my first flash in the week its going to be nice to get some understanding on how to use it.

See you tomorrow
