lighting foreground in astrophotography

This Might seem like a simple/odd question but what do you guys use for lighting foreground items when doing night shots. Obviously a torch before the smart comments come but what sort of power? What lumens? What watt?

I use an old Vivitar 283 flash unit.

I can set it to my working aperture and fire it off manually and it will sort it's own exposure out.

Perhaps not quite as flexible as using a torch but very simple and powerful.

Ah ok. I'll look around see what I can find. Probably get a couple of different power/style torches to experiment with
