Hi

I am doing my first maternity shoot next week. It's in a studio and I am planning to use two setups one with White background and the other with black.

I expect a lot of the final ages will be processes in black and White.

I am struggling to decide what lighting setup to use for the White background. Would you go really high key with blown background or just light the subject with nothing aimed specifically at the background?

What do you suggest?

Thanks

i would try them all. it only takes a couple of seconds to turn the background lights off and then start playing with the ambient light to go from hi key to low key

One of the most useful skills you can develop is to reverse engineer lighting. Find shots you like and work out how they were done from shape/direction of shadows, catchlights etc etc.

Link some you like here and I'm sure you'll get some feedback.

Good luck !

We do both. Both these shots were taken within a couple of minutes of each other with just a swivel of a light stand and switching one head off.
