So I have been asked to take some pictures for the bank that I work in. They have hired the local wine bar as the venue. I have been asked to get some pictures of the guests as they arrive.

I would like to be able to do some high key portraits and mabye some with mixed ambient and flash but I only have 2 speedlights would it be possible?

Or can anyone reccomend a good setup.

I think that speed needs to be the issue and consistant results.

do I go for butterfly lighting
or 2 speedlights at 45 degrees
need both full length shots and headshots too

have stands and 2 white and a sivler brolly. was going to use a painters dust sheet as a background and try and blow it out.

I have also been offered a 500w halogen video light if I want but I dont know if it will mix with flash?

comments more than welcome because the gig is this weekend !
 
whatever setup you decide on it should be under your control
set it up at home to get exposure, lighting, composition, PP right
so on the night just build it the same
and Bob's your Auntie!

I'm no expert, but I would imagine if your shooting manual and raw, you will be able to control the colour temp anyway, so thus eliminating any difference between the flash/video lights. As above do a set up at home and see what results you get.

Although with raw you can adjust the colour temp surely if 2 different light sources of different temperatures where shot then you would be left with needing 2 different colour temps. I've fixed this before in the past by merging two raws with different temps to blend the blue area's to the yellow area's but its a vast amount of PP work that you dont need to do.

Some filters to change the temp of the flash/video light to get them to match up with be the order of the day imo. Or you could just experiment and see if you can get away with just the speedlights.

I would consider trying lighting the subject with the speedlights and having the video light to blow out the background?
 
You will definately have problems if you mix light sources and don't correct for them.

The easiest and cheapest way to match the lights would be to filter the speedlights using a sample out of the Lee Filter Swatch book and using masking tape to attach it over the front of the flash head. You will need to selecting the right colour filter to match the colour of the halogen lights - that might be the tricky bit.

If you have a stage lighting company near you might even be able to get one of these free by asking nicely ;)

Lemme get this straight: are the guests supposed to actually pose for you in a special background setup when they arrive, for 'official' photos/portraits? Just like on a prom night? Or are you supposed to shoot 'm as they actually arrive at the event and make a 'formal' entrance?
