Hi all,

simply. . .

i am looking for a studio lighting course that isnt too pricey and close to leamington spa.

any one know of any or can make recomendations that would be great.....also while loooking for any course is there any kind of qualifications i should expect from my tutor?

thanks

Lighting courses are free on the net and there is no better way than to get a person to practice photographing, as every time you have to set up, the more times you do it the easier it will become.

If you need to have someone show you the basics then I would recommend 'Kelby Training'. Here you will have all the advice you will need for lighting and it is far more cost effective than any course you will attend.

Its like everything that you learn, if you dont do it all the time you will forget what you learned. With on line tutorials they are there 24/7 for reference. Practice till you are satisfied then you can break the rules and get creative.
With digital there is no wasted shots so you can shoot away till you get it right.

cheers for that, I am certainly going to look....although i know for myself I learn best being taught by someone I can ask questions and interact with so if anyone knows of anything like that. it would be great.

Pretty much everything that's available on the web for free is worth exactly what you pay for it in my experience.

I have videos and tutorials available on my website, not free but reasonably priced, that contain real info from someone with real experience.

Or I can provide you with 1-2-1 studio lighting training at my studio, certainly not cheap but you'll learn more in a day than you thought possible.

Or you can book on one of the Lencarta studio lighting workshops, again at my studio, when some more dates become available, obviously you won't learn as much because you'll be sharing with other people, but you won't pay as much either.

Second the Kelby training. Superb stuff.

Also good is the Mark Cleghorn stuff, though slightly more expensive and less comprehensive than kelby. Enter the code BOX for a 1 month trial access to the Cleghorn stuff for £9.99 (no affiliation with him). His courses are also worthwhile.

Not cheap but I can heartily recommend Lovegrove training, I haven't done their studio lighting workshop but ive done one of their small flash workshops and bought a few of their training DVD's and its all top notch. Damien is a very enthusiastic teacher and all round great guy so I am sure the studio workshop will be as good as the other stuff of his I have experienced.

Totally agree with you on preferring actual face to face training, on-line stuff and video training materials are good to a point but you cant beat actual real life training with someone in the know.

Nice to see others from Leam Spa on here too!

Hi Bowsa,

We currently run courses in the Birmingham area which isn't too far from you. The courses are held in a fully equipped studio and is an intensive one day course. The course does not carry any qualification though. For more information please visit our website at:

Have you taken a look at your local college to see if they offer anything?
My local college does a 4 day course spread over 4 weeks in which they teach quite a lot.
Cost is about £55 so im going to be taking a good look at that one soon.

TPD: - there doesnt seem to be any courses in my area in the near future, or have I got this wrong.

Evilonion: - I have looked at the local college and they are doing a course, a on dayer and this is not on a day that I can make, although i am contacting them to see if there are gonna be any other dates.

if anyone can advise any more that would be great as the love grove one is way out of my price range.

Thanks

You could try MIStudio in Birmingham, just off Jun 9 M42. They run a number of lighting courses from novice to advanced, either evenings or during the day. The large studio is very well equiped, and they are a frendly bunch of people to work with.

You didn't watch any of the CreativeLIVE stuff yet then? :)

In fact, I've often found that paid for content isn't worth anything more than a lot of free stuff, in fact it's sometimes a lot worse.

Joey Lawrence's first DVD is a case in point, and dont get me started on the Mike Colon Wedding DVDs..... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

(NB - I bought neither of these disks, but watched a friends).

I bought both of the Joey'L DVD's...

Zack Arias's onelight DVD on the other hand is in a different league

We have just had a very successful course last weekend... beauty, fashion and lingerie lighting with Phil Drinkwater in Blackpool, Lancashire.

They are worth doing if the photographer is to a high standard and you get a good model included as well.

All the students went home with great images on there cards and lots of ideas for future shoots.
