Anyone got any experience of lighting 3m / 10ft wide backdrops with speedlights? Can it be done with one speedlight?

I know I am unlikely to achieve high key on muslin with speedlights so I am thinking instead to go for a grey muslin and use coloured gels to create a variety of background colours....

it can be done and look for the zack arias website as it will explain it a little bit better than i ever could
but in laymans terms it's to do with cross lighting, however I imagine your going to get some fading of light across the image

You can't get absolutely even light across a wide background like that with just one light, pretty much whatever you do. You can get some nice gradient effects though.

Inverse square law - don't fight it, because you'll lose. Work with it, and it's your friend :)

a white backdrop sounds like such a ball ache. I think I am going to skip it!

I'll try and find the link for you, however it would be easier to invest in a second speedlight to get the background even across the whole frame
