Spare / backup tripod needs some head. Will be only used on rare occasions for extended hiking or stuck in the seawater. The junk chicom tripod is quite lightweight and is fitted with botched manfrotto 190 centre column in - that's the fitment / width I need. Also presume 3KG+ setup with front heavy lenses.
RC4 compatible would be ideal, but failing that I've already got the adapter plate (144g extra) to fit anything with the standard screw.
Main tripod + head is at over 4KG so not exactly enjoyable for scaling those tall mountains and is effectively unsuitable for sea work. I prefer to keep this clean and tidy for as long as possible. The good point is 410 head allows very precise and hassle free adjustments which I want to retain as much as possible.
I know I could just get another... and maybe I will when we get them on offer. I flatly refuse to pay more for a used up one on ebay than I paid to WEX for a brand new one!
Before you suggest the "obvious", I can't be bothered with swapping it between tripods. You know these 3 screws in the column base, and they are pretty inaccessible on the chicom-pod without the ratchet screwdriver.
I know the simple pan and tilt heads are no good, and as far as I know the best and cheapest geared is still 410... maybe I missed something (not the xpro please)? what about the balls? Do any allow very precise small tweaks with rock solid stability but at half the weight?
