As I am no longer able to get out and about I have been considering what I might do in the home hence my question - what camera is likely to serve my objective? The camera needs to be relatively easy to handle and some sort of remote control would be very desirable. Suggestions and recommendations would be gratefully received.

Laurence, I was thinking of £500 maximum.

Have a look at Olympus or Panasonic Micro Four Thirds. If you get one with WiFi you can control it from a smart phone of tablet. You can pick up second hand Olympus EM10 well within your budget and spend the rest on a lens. The Olympus 12-50 lens has a macro mode.

A camera phone gets you a touch screen interface plus Bluetooth and various wired remotes. You get a better, brighter screen than most cameras and there are plenty of mounting systems, particularly used by videographers. There are clip on lenses for macro.
Camera phone also gets you easy wifi transfer of all your pictures to a computer.
A camera phone can be the remote control device for a regular camera.
Otherwise, a mirrorless with side hinged touch screen like Panasonics.

Thank you Chris and Richard, more food for thought

I can vouch for some of Olympus m4/3 options on this. In built focus bracketing and stacking. Various lighting options. Touch focus and touch shooting. Decent native macro lens options. The wifi interface allows you a good degree of control remotely from a phone or just for image transfer. I'm sure there are other systems that do this too but Olympus seem to have got this stuff nicely covered.

I don't know how 'out and about' you are :) but @scoped may have some pointers for you, as in this thread:

I use the LUMIX app on my phone to control my Lumix LX100 fixed zoom lens camera. The amount of control through the app is amazing as I can change just about everything and with the added bonus of touch screen focus point which cannot be done on the camera. This is very useful for me as I have arthritic knees and cannot get low enough for some shots so being able to position the camera on a tripod and then stand up and use the phone to do the setup is a huge help. Indoors, I do the same but with my iPad giving me a 10 inch camera screen in effect.

As Kendo says, I may be able to offer some help, just ask any further questions and i'll do my best.

I researched using a tablet to control my camera here: https://www.talkphotography.co.uk/t...ering-controlling-camera.659329/#post-7926188

I use a Canon 60D, electric pan tilt head, and an asus yoga loaded with dslr controller.

With this set up i can pan and tilt the camera remotely. Through the tablet I can control my camera (white balance, iso, shutter speed, aperture etc) as well as use it as a live view and as a trigger to shoot the image.
Previously, I used a standard ballhead attached to my wheelchair, however I wanted more vertical range so now use a monopod and electric pan tilt head.

Coincidentally the top link in sphexx's post was my thread also haha!
I would recommend the disabled photographer's society. Their annual fee is well worth it. I have been a member nearly a year now, and went on a studio day with them about 3 weeks ago, which was a great experience.

If you have any questions, just ask. I've learned a lot from this forum and if what I've learned can help other people, that would be great.

Would it be worth having a forum section or a special thread for this? Not just disabled but could cover remote control generally and other sorts of aids.

Certainly a few dedicated stickies/areas to conglomerate the info! As it would save people a lot of time starting from scratch.
It could also have more specialist set ups for different uses, i.e macro, etc.

Very many thanks to you all for replies which have given me much to consider, now for the reading before deciding.
