I'm looking for recommendations or and ideas on what tripod combo to use.
Me and my 11 year old boy are walking coast to coast (Hadrian's Wall) :bonk: for charity in a couple of weeks
We will be backpacking with tents etc and I will naturally be carrying the most.
So I'm looking for a lightweight tripod and head that's sturdy :help:
I will only be taking my Canon 16-35mm lens and 5D mk2.

I guess it depends on your definition of light and your budget.

For £50 the redsnapper tripod is hard to beat, and can be bought with a variety of heads.

You could opt for a Manfrotto 460MG head which might save a few grammes.

Redsnapper do a carbon tripod but its around £140 from recollection.

There are often good deals on Slik or Velbon carbon tripods at cameraworld - check out the adverts in one of the weekly/monthly camera mags.

I've just ordered a Giottos GB1060 tripod for light weight travel when I don't want to lug my 190xprob/488rc2 around.

On the plus side it folds to 33cm, weighs 822g [both without a head] and costs £22.99 delivered via Amazon. On the downside it has a maximum height of 60cm so you'll need to get on your knees/bum to use it.

I'll try to remember to post some feedback when it arrives.

I just picked up (i.e. bought ;)) a Giottos GB1140 tripod this afternoon. I'd never seen one before, as it doesn't appear to be on their website, but it was exactly what I was looking for :).

Can't give you the exact specs, but it's pretty tall, folds down a long way, is about 1kg, is made of aluminium with 3-stage collared joints and comes with a ball head, a strap, a carry case and a set of adjustment tools - all for 79 Euros (65 quid !?).

I reckon that it would handle a 5D with a "normal" length lens, but I've yet to road test mine.

Anyway, just another model for you to Google ;)!

Gitzo Traveller.

Good, but not cheap.

Thank you guys:thumbs:
I will check all above out. Less than 2 weeks to go, so better get sorted before its to late:nono:

How much are you looking to spend? If money isn't too much of a problem then a Gitzo is probably your best bet, otherwise the GB 1060 is pretty good, pair it with a 486 RC2 ball head and you should have a reasonably sturdy system for around £65 and 1.2kg.

I wrote a review on it just yesterday if you haven't seen it yet. :)
