Hi, can anybody recommend a good book or help or anything else to get me started using a speedlight for portrait photography? Thanks

nope obviously, never checked it, it doesnt have to be a book, thank you

Light, Science and Magic - was recommended to me as the definitive book on lighting.

I have to say - it's one of those books that literally changes the way you see things and the photograph them.

It's a great text book, but it's a bit dry. Strobist.com's lighting 101 ans 102 will set him on his way much better.

A good point - LSM does work best once you clocked up some experience to which you want to then make sense of. I did find myself say "ah so that's why that works" rather a lot!

Thanks everybody, Jerrard if it is allow you can send me the ebook, thanks

Light: Science & Magic is basically a lighting cookbook, rather than a recipe book. It explains the physics of light in non-physics language and personally I think it's brilliant - but there are always going to be a lot of people who prefer a 'recipe book' that tells them where to put their lights, so that they can get bland results without putting any thought into it.

E-books - I don't know which ones Jerrard has, but the ones I've produced (and most others I suspect) are 'all rights reserved' and it would breach of copyright to share them around

+1 for the speedliters handbook. Although it's based around Canon speedlites the information holds true for all makes.

I'm on my third read and still learning stuff.

Syl's book lives in my bag now :-)

Still waiting for one of his 10m ettl cables to turn up, but that's another matter :D

you can easily just butcher a 3m cord so it can be used for both. :)

I thought you'd have already known about Syl's extra long cable Hoppy :)

Mines been on order for what seems like an age now.

Thanks. Looks really informative.

Neil's tangents blog is another great resource, I'm on phone at the moment so havent got a link handy, just Google 'neil tangents blog' he also has 2 books out, on camera and off camera flash. Best bounce flash site on the internet imo.

Thanks. It means more reading :)

It's a nice blog - check out the tutorials on the right hand column... Neil is particularly good at explaining how to get the best form on-camera flash, while Strobist is maybe better for off-camera but they can both be read together for lots of good ideas.

Another book to have a look at is Joe McNally's hotshoe diaries.
Really good read.

Great thread guys. Thanks for the very hand hints and links. Subscribed :)
