I did a mini shoot of my group on a beach yesterday, and had lots of headache with the stands. I have 2x cheap ones from 7dayshop. They have a fairly narrow base, and get easily blown away by the wind. We ended up using chairs as support and having them quite low (1.3m height only )

Is there anything more stable out there - something that wouldn't need any fiddling? Would a big heavy tripod work with portable speedlite softboxes? I gave up on the umbrellas now as the wind keeps breaking them.

Well as you are at the beach a few empty plastic bottles filled with sea water should do as weights.

Budget?

What modifiers / heads do you want to use?

I use Canon Speedlites (550 and 430EX) with 32" - 40" softboxes. Ideally I want them to go above 2m for portrait shots.

The budget should be well within the cost of a speedlite, preferably much less.

camera bag/peli is good

assistant is better

big stands are good for stability I use calumet ultra portables (put legs flat then can put stuff on) and a calumet 4m stand

the konigs are pretty stable, you just need to weight them, same as any other tripod. Even a big tripod, the only real difference in stability is going to be because it's heavier, and has a bit bigger leg span.

Sandbags don't play too nice with the konigs, go to argos and get some ankle weights. Pile 'em on. :)
