Light Stands & Softboxes for Mounted Flash

Did you get a hotspot with the Metz? I find with an SB-600 that sticking a stofen on it does wonders for the quality of the light, but it saps power like nobodies' business.

I didn't notice any hotspots but I've not used it in anger really, I just chucked it up to see what was what, I'll have another play this week. Them stofens are pretty thick if I remember rightly, lost mine ages ago. Have you thought about trying one of the tupperware alternative, might not look as pro but it might strike a balance between light distribution and power sapping.

I had a thought about the bizarre 1/500 power loss thing last night. could it be down to the discharge rate of the flash at full power? I need to repeat the test at a lower power and see what happens when I have time. Either way I'm glad I foud this out now rather than after I've shot a roll of film for something important.

his is my first softbox so not sure how it compares to the others but here's what the light distribution looks like when the power is lowered and the aperture stopped down (flash zoom set at 20mm). I'm assuming this uneven spread is continued at all power settings but I'll leave that one to the experts.

And here's what it's like at full power just to prove the first shot was deliberate.

As for the power loss at 1/500 it only seems to happen at full power, lower it to half and I get the same meter reading at 1/250 and 1/500. I'm assuming it's something along the lines of a longer flash duration at 1/1 but I wouldn't have though it would be slower than 1/500. Who knows eh

I think what I'm going to do is add a layer of diffusion material to the softbox itself and take the stofen off and see what that brings to the party...

I built my own adapter with superwhood to fit on tripod the problem was that i keep triping over the tripod but one thing i noticed is that the flash light must not directaly shoot into the softbox but my was better in the softbox shooting sideways to the wall of the box . the light was still more than sufiecent but more despursed.

Afternoon all,

I have seen photographers use light stands with their speedlights set to wireless with nice softboxes attached to them. I have looked around for stands. which are fairly affordable and found the softboxes which attach to your speedlights (but they also require a speedring, which I cant find?).

To say I am not getting frustrated would be a lie trying to find everything I need. So, if at all possible would those in the know be able to cart me together what I need? Pretty please?

One other question, how on earth does the speedlight attach to the stand?

Appreciate any help :-).

Kev, I managed to get a quick look at an Ezybox Hotshoe 38x38 today and apart from the extra layer of diffusion material I can't see any benefit in spending an extra £50 on one over the "Magic", quality-of-construction-wise there didn't seem to be much, if any difference....

Sorry for the thread revival, but Kev, would you recommend the Magic softbox now that you have had it for a while? Any example shots?

I've just bought the Lastolite 60cm kit from SpaPhoto and it comes with the masking kit free, even without the masks it was still about £20 cheaper than WE.

If your all looking for cold shoes I think Kerso now stocks the Stroboframe cold shoes which are really good.
