Light stand from a monopod

Novice question time once again. So please be gentle.

I have a couple of 580ex's. I have a few yongnuo 622c triggers. I have a cheap light stand. I was thinking of making a light stand from a monopod but the 622's don't have the female screw fitting required. Rather than carting the light stand around I thought a monopod might make a decent alternative for hand holding?

Anyone done anything similar and how did you achieve it please?

You could use one of the off-camera stands that came with your 580EX's. These have the standard 1/4" UNC female thread on the underside, and a 'shoe' for the 622c on the top.

This is how I attach mine to a pair of light-stands that I have, which have a 1/4" UNC male thread on the top.

Years ago, when I first started messing around with off camera flash I had a play around with a similar setup. I only had the one flashgun to start with, which I duly attached to a cheap Chinese monopod (nice and light) and used a sync cable to trigger the flash. It works, to some extent, but you run out of hands quickly. I have however photographed events where I've put the setup into use with an assistant, which is a much more workable situation. Being able to quickly move lighting around can be a huge bonus.

Good thinking ref the stand Dave. I'll give that a go.

And Chris that was my thought process with regards to the light being portable if it was on a monopod.

Will have a look later and see if I can make it work

Hi, I recently had the idea of fitting a flash bracket (which you'll probably need if you want to use an umbrella) to a monopod and solved the problem with a combined 1/4'' / 3/8'' Female Thread Adapter that is basically a light stand spigot that screws onto any monopod / tripod / tripod head. The one I have is here; not the best but also not the most expensive.
