Hi,

Normally my main interest has been landscapes whilst I am out walking.

However since becoming a member of this forum and looking through the posts, especially the portrait forum, the idea of having a go at portraits has started to interest me.

Following some advice form here I have read and enjoyed "Mastering Canon EOS flash" as I use a 430 II.

I would like to try and understand a bit more about the whole lighting subject and equipment. I have carried out a further search and the book that seems to come up the most is "Light science and magic"

The posts were from 2007/2008, are there any new alternatives that I should consider?
As always thanks for any advice.

An excellent book and worth every penny

It's a great book, but I felt more useful for product photography.

I think that a lot of people think that it's more useful for product photography. But that's probably because it's easier to get precise, controlled lighting on products that don't move and easier to use still life as a teaching tool.
In fact, Light: Science & Magic is about the physics of light, very well explained in a way that anyone can understand

I've had my copy a while, and still learn something new from it each time I read it.

If you use Flickr, there's a Light Science & Magic group to have a look at, which gets fairly regular input from one of the authors.
