Can anyone suggest a decent light meter that's not to expensive. No more than £100, if possible. The Sekonic 308 appear to get good reviews, but I have no experience of using one, so would appreciate your view.

It is very good, I have the 308 and 758 (got cheap off ebay) seller had the name listed wrong so no one was viewing and wasn't coming up in search.

I find it great to give you a starting point or to give you an idea on the lighting situation.
 
As per Bryn's comment, the 308 is a very good light meter to start off with and can be had for under £100.
 
I know of a few folk that have said the 308 is useless outdoors

I got a mint Minolta Flash Meter IV for £80, great kit.

Granted, I don't use my 308 outdoors, can't comment on this.

Two separate photographers told me they got rid of their 308s because they were too temperamental in bright conditions. I suppose they are liars then. Damn them.

I have a 308 and I've found it to be great in all conditions. Granted, it's not as good as some of the more expensive models. But for under £100 I reckon its well worth the money. Even outside.
 
The two people in question happen to be wedding photographers. No point carrying on this conversation as I'm obviously full of #### according to tp's own Stephen hawking.
 
I'm also interested in one of these but the only way I can find to get one for under £100 seems to be from the far east on ebay.

Is this a good idea or would it be better to pay the extra £30 and buy from a reputable place in this country? I'm just thinking if there was any problems/faults.

Do what I did and get a 2nd hand one. Oddly, the 308 is the cheapest 'proper' flash/ambient meter and being a really popular item holds it's value unnaturally. If you search eBay, you'll probably get an older better meter cheaper.

I just got a Minolta IIIf for £35 :)

Have you actually used one yourself? I bought one about 18 years ago, gets used regularly, never had an issue and of course it has been updated since I bought mine.
