I've just returned to photography after a few years absence and I've bought a secondhand 30D. I found whilst rummaging through my old kit a Weston Master lll . I'm bidding on ebay for an Invercone & ND Filter for this meter.

Is it worth bidding higher on these bits ( I'm up to £7.50)or is the Weston too old, unreliable or just not up to the job compared with modern meters?

Well you already have the meter and it's a classic of it's time which will still do a good job today. What you have to look at is what it would cost you to buy it's modern equivalent or a decent digital one, so I wouldn't be too worried about what you pay for the cone and other bits to make your meter complete. ;)

The Weston is a classic. For the cost of the bits, go for it. But don't go mad

Actually, looking at Weston meters on ebay, I'm amazed at what you can pick them up for. Anyone wanting a meter could do a lot worse - I don't think these prices even begin to reflect the quality and usefulness of these meters - even more so with some of the later models. ;)

The bidding on ebay for the cone etc is now over £10 so I may as well give the auction a miss. As far as buying a more up to date and simpler to use meter goes, is it a question of "how much do you want to spend" ?

Yep - it's all down to the wonga you want to part with.. you wont be surprised to hear. ;)

Assuming you're thinking about a digital meter, they are easy to use once you've set up ISO etc, and you just have to press a single button to obtain a reading which stays on the display. Very convenient in use.

The more expensive ones have their own viewfinder and 1 degree spot metering- both really useful, and often a host of other features and modes which in all honesty you may never use, so if you're thinking of going that route do plenty of research before you commit to anything. Certainly look for one that does reflected and incident readings and a meter which can take flash readings as well if possible - depending on likely usage of course.
