Yes
Just devd a 35mm film and sadly there is evidence of light entry across some of the frames.

The light leakage shows itself across the film sprocket holes before filtering onto the frame itself.

I am believing / praying this is a door seal issue and not a shutter problem..

I know there are kits available and indeed will look into purchasing one if needs be....not sure it's such an easy job to do mindst.

Question:

I wish to continue using the SLR body and know I could tape the bottom edge of the door ( the light entry shows itself on the "top" of the frame!), however I don't wish to damage the leatherette with the sticky of the tape.....What temporary repairs have you guys done to carry on shooting?

Decent quality Masking tape onto the leatherette/body of the camera, then something more opaque stuck to the masking tape. Masking tape will peel off with no residue.

A cheap way of finding the leak is to tape over suspected places (one place at a time) make a note, and with afga vista (or any old neg film you don't want) in your camera take different shots in bright sunlight, then dev with B\W chemicals....well assuming you do B/W and there is no supermarket around that would dev for £1.

Thanks Mark.....Taping it up is the way to go for the moment t'il I get seals sorted.....Masking tape it will be then!

Thanks for the links......I guess the apprehension is natural of anything first time around and will prove to be a stroll in the park in reality.

Yep good advice there Brian ....There does look ( upon closer inspection) , a very doubtful area half way along the bottom door seal....I'll tape that section and get out in the sun tomorrow for a few frames and see what comes of it.

The most frustrating thing is, it's actually the body i intended taking away with me later this month.

Ah Asha you don't suffer from CRAB then as if one camera is dodgy you just use another, that you have picked up cheap :)

CRAB= can't resist a bargain

Ah well yes I suppose i do suffer from CRAB in a similar way as I suffer GAS :D

I have other alternatives Brian it was just the body in question has a faster top speed than the others.

Asha, you did not mention the body, what is it?

There may be some history that could help.

Nikon FE2

Looks like the seals may have already been changed before as the foam is grey.....iirc, the originals installed by Nikon were black.

At first glance it looks in reasonable order however, i gently touched it wth a matchstick and the foam immediatley began to crumble away.

I think that the camera, if it does prove to be just a seal issue, certainly merits a proper repair. I've never actually owned Nikons (mainly due to buying into Canon system lenses and not wanting to duplicate the whole expense) but the F and FE's are lovely looking old things... As I Said, the masking tape with additional layers should allow verification it's the seals without causing any damage to the actual cameras structure/fabric - and if its just the seals, it's just a matter of being thorough, careful and methodical - which is something that most film shooters should be used to being anyway

If it is the seals and sounds like it may be, it is such an easy repair to do yourself.

The material is obtainable from a lot of people on e-bay at very low cost and the work takes about two hours even for me.

I bought the foams and other required bits and pieces in sheets cost about £10.00 and will do about ten camera's.
