Me and Mrs Bump are off travelling later in the year for almost a month around some of the Greek islands. We are looking to to travel light but I would like to take a small laptop with us always to look up sites locally and keep in touch with ferry details etc.

I currently have an ACER 14" which is way to big and heavy even though its quite compact, I figure 11" screen at most. I would also like the option of maybe replacing standard HDD with SSD.

Any thoughts.

The Asus X102b looks a good option. I will not be required for any hard core processing or games etc.

To Add budget is £300 max

Asus Transformer T100. Bit over budget, but goes everywhere with me.... Charger is the size of a tablet charger too so easy to carry.

to be honest I have done the Android tablet thing a few years ago and I didnt enjoy it.

The T100 is a Windows laptop, that also splits in half to become a Windows tablet. It comes with a free copy of MS Office.

Oh I see yes, ummm not foe me though i would rather have a conventional laptop

It *is* a conventional laptop (other than the screen can be detached) as it runs Win 8.1 and has USB ports and (micro) HDMI out.... but with tablet style battery life. The processor in it is also 2x as quick as the cheaper X102b and battery life is way, way longer (10+ vs 3 hours).

Anyone any other thoughts happy to buy second hand?

wondering about HP mini?

Samsung Series 5 ultrabook, I know you have a 14", but is it bulky? the ultrabooks are a lot smaller

Well reviving this thread, I bought a used but mint Samsung N110 Netbook for £90.
Just finished installing a nice slim XP Pro build and a few bits I need like Firefox and VLC media Player.

Got a 2Gb Ram stick on order to replace the 1Gb and will probly also clone the XP build to an SSD just to finish the package, very sweet little machine.

Just read this thread, I was going to suggest a netbook. But try and make sure you are both happy with the ergonomics and amount of screen real estate before you go.
