Anybody see it? Best series on the box at the moment IMO and it's a shame it ended last night. There were so many twists and turns and it made for some good viewing. It also looks like the left the way open for another series.

There is certainly an opening for another series. It is great to see new ideas on the BBC. this one was a winner from the start.

According to an article in todays Times there will be another series set in the 80s with the Gene Hunt character and a female time-travelling sidekick.

I heard thats it. No more Life on Mars. Thats annoying, but at the same time great. Better to end a series now than to try and stretch it over another season. I think everything has been dealt with in a good way and I can't see how they'd integrate all the elements again. Certain things have been concluded and the series wouldn't be Life on Mars without them in a 3rd series. The interesting thing is how can they do a spin-off? Was it all in Sam's head, and if so without him those people can't exist. Was he really Sam Beckett? Brilliant show.

I missed how Sam ended up back in time :(

I got up to grab another beer when he was talking to his mum, came back in the room and he's back in 73

I was at a charity dinner with the lady who played his mum last week, and she wouldn't tell me what part she'd played :D

Great show, it's a shame it's over.

I heard too that they wern't going to make any more. But it was excellent while it lasted:clap:

As someone in 73 said to him, if you can't feel anything you're not alive. In 2007 he couldn't feel anything and even cut himself. He didn't feel alive so he went up to the roof and jumped off. He woke up to find himself back in his fantasy world of 1973 and saved his friends. He then got the girl, and things went back to normal. I was reading an interview with the creator who said it was a bit controversial to have Sam commit suicide. What they found was that people didn't see it as committing suicide. I felt the same. It seemed life affirming.

I saw him come back and save the guys, but missed the leap of faith. Cheers Pete for clearing that up.

I sometimes wish I was back in 73. Less of this PC rubbish :)

It's on BBC 4 now, started at 9:00.
The Mk3 Cortina was auctioned off on ebay for Red Nose day. Sold for £12,800. Inclusive of knocks and scratches from it's life in the series.
I'd have liked to have seen a third series, but now that Sam is dead there would be no messages from the future etc. so I can't see how it would work.
Apparently America are making their own version.

Got very confused in the last episode, but got the gist of the suicide...........thing is, is he alive or not, back in 73? If he committed suicide in the present, how can he be?? My brain hurts!

Its quite simple. He was always in a coma. Eventually he woke up back in 2007 but he didn't feel alive anymore. He felt more alive in his dream world of 1973. He made the insane choice to commit suicide by jumping off a building. The way they did it felt like he was jumping, reaching for life. He wanted to live, to feel alive and if it took death to do that he was ok. So he jumped and died. He woke up back in 73 and saved his friends, got the girl and drove off into the afterlife. You can hear the radio, the people in 2007 saying that they're loosing him. He doesn't care and tunes them out. He's happy. You could say that his final moment in 2007 lasted a life time in 73.

watched it on 4 last night...good ending, if a bit of a headache to think about, nice summary though Pete..get you with your head around the complicated program!

You don't die when you dream :) He's dead. His final moments of life in 2007 were spent in the dream world of 1973.

So he's dead....but alive again in '73?? Weird but fun!! Wonder if that happens to us all once we shuffle off this mortal coil? Which year would you like to go to?

Slightly off thread but, there is a book called "the five people you meet in heaven" by Mitch Albom, which is really good and you seem to get to live in the times when you were happiest when alive.

I would have to go back to 1997 which is the year I met my wife. Was a great year.

That's roughly how i saw it (although it may not be the case in the writers head)... he definitely dies, the scary girl from the test card proves that right at the end, as she always represented death.

Isn't that part of the whole mistery though? he may have actually travelled back in time, and took the decision of living in 1973 over 2007, and there is no way back.

If that is the case he would now be about 65 in 2007.

I was kinda hopeing that when he went back to 2007 you would get to see what had happened to the other characters and what they were doing in 2007. i.e Chris was now a Chief Inspector, Gene was an ageing alcholic living on the Costa Del Sol, writing crime thrillers.

Nope it is what the writers had planned. I've read an interview with them. The scary girl at the end was an attempt at lightening the mood of the show. Their main character had just killed himself and she was a reminder to us that it was only TV, don't worry.

Yeah I had hoped that he was really in 1973 and would meet those people, but if you notice throughout the show he's always hearing voices and getting info over the radio / tv. Its clear that he's just in a coma. Sure it takes some of the mystery out the show, but it would since its the conclusion :)

Ah, that's why it's all quite simple ;)

yes the interview makes things a lot clearer, cheers Pete

Good link Pete, now we've got to wait for the Gene Genie to return to our screens! :D

he didnt kill himself at the end, he put himself back into the coma so as to be back in 1973, this is evident from the fact that when they all sat in the car at the end and someone started talking to him back in his coma, he said "i hate this channel" and then turned it over to "life on mars" by david bowie.

hes still in a coma, back in 2007, and he returned to 1973, yes they left it open for another season but i doubt they'll do another (apart from this spin off in the 80's)

thats how i see it, its come to a natural conclusion, sam gets annie, thats pretty much it

Yeah thats what I thought, till I read the interview. He's toast, gone, kerput, worm food.

I've never really watched it untill the last few episods and was really impressed, it just had that air of quality all good shows have about them :) But if they brought out another series and it was complete rubbish that would spoil the whole thing. I always think of when clint eastwood was being interviewed and the interviewer was talking to him about doing another dirty harry to lay the character to rest and so on. He was saying he was to old and so on and then he ended it with telling him "Some things are better left un-touched" which is just on of the best comments ever IMO same idea really?

so this interview i havent read, does it suggest that just outside shot when he jumps off the roof is a large toaster, whice he falls into, before being toasted, and then ground down and put in a wormery.......

sounds like compelling reading!

*snip*
and put in a wormery.......

sounds like compelling reading!

In the original version of the screenplay he was to fall into an Ant farm but they didn't think the typical BBC viewer would understand

:coat:

Drop your weapons! You are surrounded by Armed Bast**ds!

Best line of any series ever.

 Got to agree with you there. Gene Hunt had some absolutely classic lines in that show......A great character IMO, so glad he's gonna be in a spinoff.

Gene Hunt - a harder ba$tard than Jack Regan?
If so is that just because LOM was written 30 years post-The Sweeney?

Looking forward to Ashes To Ashes

Yep, thats a 'class' white square for sure!!:D

Fixed your link for you mate. You just put the video code inbetween the tags, rather than the full URL.

"You two tarts, geddin!...You too flash knickers"

Great idea, we should all post our favourite scenes. This was one of mine from the first series when we were just getting to know Gene Hunt, the bit at the end with the Cortina in reverse is pure class.
