Just out of interest and because I think I may hang on too long to mine, how long on average do you keep the following items before binning and buying new?

Woolly v neck jumper for work? Ive had one a year and its getting quite baggy now tempted to bin.
Work trousers? As long as the waist band still fits basically

Shirts? Could be years

Undercrackers? Im very picky and cant find a comfortable pair anywhere at the mo so am hanging on to my old M&S micro skin ones as long as they hold up.

Socks? Until the elastic goes in the top and/or a hole appears. Pringle ones seem to last quite well, easy a year.

As I say just for interest... I know, I need to get out more.

Until they're worn out. Jumpers could be anything up to 20 or 30 years. Depends on the jumper. Some cheap acrylics last ages. Some I bought as a student in the early 1990s look the same as when they were new.

You must be vicious to your clothes as I get years and years out of a pair of socks usually. Poor ones will only do 3 or so.

Generally I keep clothes until they're not fit for purpose. That means that if it needs to look smart then it will get replaced sooner than if it doesn't, therefore:

Tee shirts will often get faded & with small holes before they're passed on (3 to 15 years)
Trousers get replaced when they either get holes or the wear is objectionable
Suits get replaced when no longer smart. In my case that means the 2 suits (both apparently hand made) I bought from a charity shop in '97 for £18 have just been replaced.
Shoes go when they either have holes/splits or the lining becomes too worn to be comfortable.
Orpheus (pants and socks) go when they develop holes.
Considering Suz' comments, I seem to have a LOT of jumpers, some acquired as far back as about 1980.
Sports kit gets replaced when the elastic goes. I don't know why, but cycling/swimming clothing elastic seems vastly inferior to regular elastics, and becomes hard in just a few short years.

Just how long is a length of knicker elastic? I wear my jeans until they wear out which may be 2-5 years, ditto boxer shorts, but end up not wearing certain items because they don't fit or feel comfortable/smart any longer. Every so often I have a purge and take unworn clothes to the charity shop, very few are worn out tbh. Certain items are relegated to 'gardening wear' too.

Usually two garments worn in rotation will last a lot longer than two worn consecutively, especially shoes.

Until they get too worn out to wear.

When something's worn out, it doesn't get worn out but might still get worn for slobbing about in at home etc. until it's actually falling to pieces. Shirts, socks and solomons which are nearing the end of their useful life get taken on holiday and binned when dirty rather than wash or bring them home.

Mine last until a combination of wife/washing machine/ tumble drier have shrunk them to a size more suitable for a midget

I wear my clothes until they mysteriously disappear. Strangely, new clothes mysteriously appear at the same time.

Glad i'm not the only one who keeps clothes for ages!! Some of my gear is years old and still going strong, but I've never been into "fashion", so my stuff just sort of stays in style and gets chucked out when it's worn out. As most of it came from charity shops in the first place, I'm generally reluctant to send it back there!!!! :)

Had a great find the other day though ... went in the loft for something and found a suitcase with all my old work clothes (suits and other smart stuff, not looked at for over 4 years since I retired) which I'd forgotten about. Emptied it and found some really nice stuff i'd forgotten about, so my stock of smart(ish) trousers and jackets has been replenished without any expense at all: some of it must be 15 years old and still looking good.
