Good grief.
OK, lets explain motor racing - there are those that are supremely talented and never make it, because they never got the breaks or their face/attitude/etc didnt fit [Tommy Byrne for example]. There are those that lack any inate talent but learn to be pretty quick, and do the right things and ultimately get a few breaks and work bloody hard to make it to the big league [David Couthard for example], there are those that have some talent and are a modern marketing dreams that do make it, BIG time [Lewis Hamiliton for example], they work bloody hard too, yes, certain things are handed to them, they have 'front' and an ability to say exactly the right thing, but behind it all, they graft their asses off to get there! There are also those that have the same marketing dream that show only the simplest of talent [Bruno Lalle...err, sorry Senna, for example] but will sell so much advertising space, it doesnt matter how crap they are, the dollar signs are what counts. Finally, there are those that are the same as the first category, but the face fits at the time, they get the breaks and they deserve the rewards [Micheal Schumacher for example, or even better, Alain Prost]
F1 is not a sport, its a business, thats once a fortnight spends 2 hours on a sunday afternoon having a bit of a race. For the rest of the time, its all about the dollars. Don't ever forget that, because you can be sure no one in the paddock ever does.
Well thanks for that, I've only been watching F1 for 35 years & it's really helped clear up 1 or 2 items for me.
I have a question though.
You claim that DC was more disadvantaged then Lewis & therefore had to work harder.
But DC went to a Public School & Lewis was expelled from his local Comprehensive - how does that fit into your picture?
Also, DC had all his bills paid for him on his way into F1, much as Lewis did. But with the difference that Lewis 1st had to impress Ron Dennis & DC could rely on his father's income.
Moving on, DC had Britian's best sporting agency working for him as he made his move into F1 - wheras Lewis only had his talent & his dad.
As a result DC walked into Williams at a point in which it was a Championship contending team & then moved to McLaren on a mega deal. Hardly a disadvantage IMO.
You could say that the likes of Jonny Herbert had it harder than Lewis on their way into F1 but to say DC had to do it the hard way is, frankly, cobblers.
Yes Lewis has had the benefit of the best preparation Ron could devise before he got into an F1 car but do you think that DC wouldn't have been offered the same had it been available back then? With the all important difference that Lewis got the gig on talent & DC on his dad's cash + some very efficient hype.
As for your comments on Michael Schumacher, I am very nearly lost for words. I was convinced that he was no great shakes in a Merc Sportscar & was only taken on board by Willi Weber 'cos Heinz-Harald Frentzen turned his management offer down.
I sincerely doubt that Schumacher would have been able to BS his way into Jordan without Weber's help - at that point he had been discarded by Merc & was struggling to run an F3000 program.
Finally, simply having read "Crashed and Byrned: The Greatest Racing Driver You Never Saw." does not = knowing the truth behind his time in F1, not by a very long way.
I suggest you think twice before attempting to set yourself up as some kind of F1 guru.
