Hi,

Has anybody been to the Leuchars airshow before? I've never been to any airshow before, and was just wondering if 300mm is enough (on a D300) for flying aircraft?

I will probably take the 18-200mm and 10-20mm for the static ones.

Oh yeah... Is it worth getting grandstand seats?

Thanks,
John

Interesting topic, this is to be my first airshow as well this year, and as I only have a 70-200 I was planning on hiring a 100-400 for the event incase the 200 is not long enough.

Be interesting to hear from others that have shot there before?

300mm will be fine.No real need for the grandstand unless you want a seat for the day.
More problematic at Leuchars is the position of the sun.You are shooting straight into it for most of the day. It's for that reason that I now only consider Leuchars if I have missed any of the other bigger shows.Lots of pics from leuchars on my site .They will give you an idea of what to expect.

Cheers
Gary

I've been there for the last few years. It's a good show, *** as has been said, shooting into the sun dosent help. I use my 100-400 zoom with the hood on which helps. A longer lens is better for the single plane displays but a shorter one is good for the formations.
Shooting the reds can be problematic. You need to decide whether you want to concentrate on cliseups such as the synchro pair and tight formations or go for the wider shots like when they fan out with their smoke trails. Oh yeah and a couple f years ago the weather was **** and half the planes never flew. It is usually nice though.

Thanks guys:)
Hopefully I'll manage to catch a few decent shots. Will be good to see and hear it all anyway - maybe have the wife armed wife an HD camcorder.

Just seen on the website that there's going to be a B52 on static display - have always wanted to see one of them.

John
