I am also a varifocal user, have been for years and got on with them from day one...............yes the brain had to accommodate the initial strangeness but I was 'good to go'.
In regard to the camera "on" they stay, the higher eyepoint of the 7D and now my 5D3 means I can see almost all of the viewfinder info unlike my old 350D now that was fun (not ) Though the one thing that does make life a tad awkward is that my left eye is dominant (i.e. left eye to the viewfinder) so I am always rubbing the tip/side of my nose on the LCD
I leave mine on, but always look through the vf over the top of my specs and never through them. If I'm using live view, I use my glasses too. Funnily enough, I'd never noticed before seeing this thread!
