I've had a quick scout round and there doesn't seem to be a beginner's thread for processing images from IR modified cameras. Well, I just bought an IR camera and I'm a beginner at IR processing so I thought it would be a good idea to start one. :)

[To keep things simple, let’s stick to IR cameras - faking IR should have its own thread.]

From an hour or so's play, it looks like an IR camera can do 3 things for me:
  1. Produce ethereal B&W pictures with translucency
  2. Produce really high contrast B&Ws with an "other worldly" look
  3. Do weird stuff with false colours
I'm going to be honest that I don't quite understand option 3 but I'm happy to be convinced.

What are your go to resources and techniques for processing your images? What pitfalls have you found?

I'm no great expert but have IR cameras. I understand that they can be converted at different settings to give different results. Apparently mono needs to be different from colour, but don't ask me to explain the technicalities.
There is a specific thread on here for IR :- https://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/ok-then-lets-see-your-infrared-images-please.493937/
@g8ina seems to be a bit of a whizz on this.

There is a link here that is useful :- http://photo.tutsplus.com/tutorials/...hy-processing/

I mainly use a tutorial from the Canon EOS magazine from a couple of years ago. As it's Canon it only talks about using DPP, but I just use CS6 and it works just as well, if not better. I have the pages saved and can mail them to you if you let me have an address.

I usually try and do wierd stuff with false colours; chacun a son gout!

Thanks - yes I found that thread. I thought it was more about posting lovely piccies so this could be about editing and techniques.

I'm enjoying this site ATM - https://markhilliardatelier-blog.com/ Mark started with a dedicated IR site and has now branched out into other stuff.
