Will it pass the test? :D

Always liked them, never had one, but..........hmmmmmmm.

And how often has it been "off road" ?

usually two or three times a week, not serious stuff but enough to actually switch on the four wheel drive :p

You cannot really slag off a T5 Volvo 850 estate... although the thought on everyone's mind will be - Wheres the tow bar?:bonk:

You've Obviously have never owned one then!

i had a 1995 se 2.3 turbo t5 with 58k on the clock which i got rid of about 2 years ago after owning it for no more than 2 months!

Far to heavy, not really roomy compared to todays estates, the auto box whined more than me wife and the thirtsy, highly in-efficient engine returned 18 mpg (or so the trip computer said...i worlked it out as returning 14 mpg!)

couldn't wait to get rid!

That's a V70. not a T5 (a derivative of the 850). The T5 was a 2.5L, not 2.3 - I'm not a big Volvo fan, but the engine is similar to the model in my Focus.

You do realise that the original T5 actually won the BTCC with an estate ???

If you meant the one in the pic, it says T5 on the back. The T5 model designation has been used for quite a few Volvos over the years, not just the 850 ;)

This is still what I think of when someone says Volvo T5 though...

The picture was from a prevoius entry in this thread which i quoted..

the volvo which i bought was an 850 2.3 se turbo t5

as for 'won the BTCC with an estate' , other than the shape that has nothing to do with the road going car that i bought! dont believe the sales hype.

I would like to know what mpg the 2.5 version of this engine returned!

It IS a T5.

Its a V70 T5.

They also made an 850 T5 before they facelifted it and called it a V70.

All 850 and V70 T5's are 2.3 turbos with the exception of the AWD which was a 2.5 with a low pressure turbo.

Even the T5-R (pictured earlier in yellow) was a 2.3 turbo, but with different engine management and slightly larger turbo, putting power up to 245bhp from 225.

The engine in your Focus is not 'similar' to the Volvo engine, its exactly the same 2.5ltr lump, with the T5 bits stuck to it.

Now for the slagging.....

At least its got a good engine !! ;)

Based on the Mazda 3 arn't they ? Theres no getting away from the fact that its a Ford Focus, and as such, is really very unimaginative, as is the Mazda upon which it is based.....

Rightly or wrongly, this car says all the wrong things about its driver, this car says, "I used to own a Saxo, but now I've got a bit more money and fancied an upgrade"

No..it was an 850, not a V70..it was the pre face lift model, i dont know when the facelift happened, but mine was the square, hurst-a-like one.

I believe that you can call an engine 'good' when a 2.3, 5 cylinder turbo engine only produces 225bhp ( when some modern 2.0l petrol engines give nearly 240 bhp from an n/a engine) and returns an average of 18mpg..baaaaddd engine:thumbsdown:

Dont know if were on about the same mowter Bob. I'm talking about the black one pictured above which has a V70 badge on the back, V70 rear lights and V70 alloys.

As for power, the T5 lump is not a modern power plant. I know some modern 2.0lt engines can produce lots of power, but then technology and engineering have come on an awful lot since the T5 engine. So hardly a fair comparison.

I know consumption was dire, thats why I sold mine, but my god do I miss it. That engine growl you got through the bulkhead, ALL that torque. 18mpg avg is about right if you have a heavy right foot, mine averaged 28-29 which i'll admit, is still not great, but better than 18.

My bad about the T5, I thought (wrongly) that the "T5" designation was for the quick one... And I still believe it's the only estate car to win the BTCC championship.

Contrary to your observations, I've never had a Saxo, or a Corsa or whatever. I did have a 2001 Vectra GSi before the Focus though. :gag: I've had the car almost 3 years, and still love it to bits. It's quick, comfortable, fun to drive and holds its own against the expensive competition.

I think the Saxo boys head for the VXR, the Focus is a bit too much torque and not enough RPM for them.......

No point in posting a photo - everyone knows what a Citroen Xsara Picasso looks like! 1.6, petrol and Exclusive trim level (2nd hand, right price!). Silver.

Jesus, a 2.0L engine that puts out 240BHP - they didn't have those when I bought my Vectra two-litre!!

Ric Type R, glad to see you at least went for a car that isn't as common as muck.. like those aweful Focus STs... still, there are far too many CTRs on the road...:)

Mine's clean as of the end of October, first time in over 10 years, and surprisingly, none have come on the bike or via the ST.....

I quite fancy an S4 next time round (I can't stretch to the RS4.....) Still, 4.2L V8 4WD should be lots of fun.... Had a spin in an M3 last week, nice car but the badge puts me off.....
