:woot:

Sometimes walking the dog in dreary, cold, wet, miserable and flooded conditions does have its benefits ... :suspect: ... just sometimes ...

I saw a very small mostly B & W bird acting strange and in a very unlikely place and immediately knew it was something different ... ... you just do right ... :D

Anyway ... long story short ... I have today seen my very first Lesser Spotted Woodpecker in the United Kingdom ... :woot::thumbs:

Even though I had no camera (situation normal !?!) and was, unusually, without my trusty Green Leica field binos I am quite a happy bunny as this little blighter has eluded me for more years than I care to mention ... a right PITA bogey species for me in fact ...

Just thought I'd share my deep joy with all you good peeps ... :geek:

:p

Now you've seen one you'll see them all over the place now ;) Shame you never had the camera but hey, a sighting is great enough. ;)

 Good for you Ven. I was excited too and clicked quickly to see the pic though  You will just have to go back out with you binos and camera another day ;)

I know how it feels though, When we were on our way out the door for Yorkshire yesterday morning we had our own special moment... and the postie shared too  We stood watching 3 Barn Owls hunting together over the field next to our house, and at one point one of them was within 3 feet of me when it swooped. Unfortunately my camera was packed up in the car so I didn't get any pics either. But I know that feeling of joy Ven. It's feels good.

If you stake the place out you'll probably never see it again

I don't believe I've ever seen one for real either.

Thanx Peeps ... :thankyou: ... you sum up my feelings very well with your buzzes (Hairy) and deep joys (Jo) and a sighting is great enough (AJ) ... :D

Summed up very well indeedy ... ;) ... but I am sorry for those of you expecting my very own images ... ... I did post a linky up to give you a flavour though ... :naughty:

Thanx again ... :p

Well done Ven, something I've never seen either
Have you got a compact camera to keep in your pocket in case you see him again when you walk the dog ?
Pete

We won't think any lesser of you Ven :D

We have them at a local nature reserve, and I have managed to see one.
I'm still waiting to see the green variety

Not yet Pete ... :D ... all I had was my K800i and I really don't think that is anything like up to the task ...

Have been thinking about a compact for just those sorts of occasions ... :suspect: ... but I really think a bird like that would need to be very close for a compact to provide recognisable photos of it ...

Heyho ... :D

:p

Sounds all very exciting Ven!
But I have admit that I didnt know the difference between the Greater & Lesser Spotted's ... and probably still wouldnt! :$
Look forward to seeing a pic if you manage it.

Thanx Glo ... it was ... :D

The Lesser is much, much smaller than the Greater being not much bigger than a House Sparrow really ... ;) ... the thing that struck me most seeing it 'in the flesh' was just how black & white it looked ... ... a bit like a Pied Wag with 'pecker tendencies ...

Can't guarantee any pics of this little bird ... :suspect: ... especially if I have to wait another *& years to see a second ... :D

The Lesser Spotted has a very distinctive pattern of black and white bars across it's back Glo, in fact it's also known as the Barred Woodpecker...

In contrast this is the Great Spotted on my feeder....

 well done Ven!! Good feeling innit! Had my own first on friday, a green woodpecker in my own back garden. Have seen them once before, but never at Mucky Mansions. Had the camera, but it was early morning, so not fully light and only had short zoom on - to say the picture is noisy is an understatment  ...but now I know they are around.... :D

Oh b****r!!!
Had a small Woody in the Poplar a couple of weeks ago, up until then Id only seen the green one here.
It did look like somewhat like that pic of the Lesser Spotted. Though tbh, I remember thinking it looked a bit scruffy at the time
Took a couple of pics but they were so embarrassingly bad, I deleted them after showing my son.
Guess Ill never know whether I had a Great or Lesser now.... unless it comes back of course!
