Dave

Thanks for the heads up...it's currently raining here!.

Sadly its foggy and cloudy here all weekend (Northants) but thanks for the heads up I would have liked to have a go at this.

Bulb mode ISO 100, F8, long shutter speed, cable release  and a fair bit of luck

I know it obviously depends on how bright the sky is (light pollution, moonlight etc), but typically, how long would you expose for with these settings? Apologies if this is a bit of a daft question, but I am still learning, and I have been warned that very long exposures can damage the camera sensor through overheating?

Regards
Danny

Skys looking good here so far, I will probably be going for about 20 second exposures.

Any tips on getting them in a shot? Or is it just luck?

Personally I will be shooting around ISO800-2500 depending on camera and around f/4-5.6 on continuous 30 second exposures

Matt

Cheers for posting this Dave

I was a little disappointed at first because I didn't get a remote trigger today as intended......but then I read this -

Matt, thanks for that, I wouldn't of thought of doing it that way

So if we get clear skies , as forecast, I'll give it a go

Phil if you don't have a trigger, it will make things a little harder but no where near impossible, just get some strong tape (gaffer tape) and tape the shutter down, will cost you for first and last frame but will be very effective

I always use those settings I said, but Fair enough Id go with that then

nothing wrong with your settings buddy, just not the way I would approach it personally  horses for courses as they say :D

Youve done more of sky shooting than I have, so I'll give it a go with your settings  or a mixture to see the differences

Forecast cloudy with showers. Always is for me when there's a celestial event of some kind.

Indeed I've fired off a couple of exposures :D

Forgot about this!! It's clear skies outside so hopefully it will hold out, too late for me to drive out so I will stay in garden and see what I can get lol

Don't forget to put your camera outside to cool down, otherwise you will get misted up glass.

not looked outside yet but just about to head off to location :D

What time should be best for me to catch them? I'm in Bedfordshire

What's better lens for this 18-135 / 70-200 F4 / 150-500 ?

I was out in the middle of nowhere ( near consett ) and seen approx 6-8 In about 40 mins, I also for the 1st time in my life got to see the milky way and with the naked eye ( also took a pic).

Well I need a change of pants... First location failed as the fog moved in so my second location was on the grounds of a castle.. had to hop a few gates ect then walk down some long tight creepy paths , hearing all sorts running off. Set the camera up for a test shot and seen this white thing... ( torch + fog ) camera tripod all up and going before you could say boo!

i'm not looking in the right place am i?
also, having to use a 35mm which I read somewhere isn't really good for this type of thing.

Been out for the last hour and a half... It's one of the clearest nights I have ever seen (Lincolnshire)... But I did not see any meteors! I think I may have seen one in the corner of my eye as I walked towards my front door lol. Got some good star shots though :) I remember going to view this meteor shower a couple of years ago and it was fantastic... A little disappointing this year :(

I am interested to know if anyone else has seen any/many?
