I'd vote Focus Titanium estate or Mazda 6 Estate (a better Ford?), as they are much bigger boys. Leon has very limited rear visibility from experience, and little space for people at the back. Altea is a much better car.
I think the Mazda is a bigger car, more of the Mondeo class than the Focus class.
20,000 miles is very long service interval, probably too long. I though that it was possible to set up a VW group car so that it tells you when it needs a service, based on your driving stiyle and type of driving ,ie mix of city and motorway driving, rather than on a simple time or distance interval.
My skoda has a service interval of 20,000 miles, people have said it senses the driving, but I always hit around 20,000 before the service light comes up. It gets a litre of oil halfway between services.
The Mazda is bigger, but has a great off on at the moment which makes it cheaper than the Focus and the Leon by a few grand.
How long are you planning to keep the car? The auto box you tried is called DSG. It's a great box but once warranty has expired it maybe expensive to fix though so far they seem fairly well built. Have you considered a Skoda Octavia? Build quality is slightly better than what you get with a Seat I feel or there is the obvious choice of a VW Golf.
The octavia is a good car, but basic and lacks features.
I've driven a few seats as courtesy cars and they've been great.
Doors use some better materials, but styling on everything but the Octavia is poor and the list of missing features is too long. Overall the Leon is a much nicer place to be over the current Octavia.
The golf is too bland. It is a more expensive blander skoda with some chrome thrown in.
I'm going for the manual box as I still don't trust autos to do what I want.
There all pretty much the same underneath. Seats do have the best styling out of the VAG group. You can also get the servicing set to 10k/1 year or the 2 years/circa 20k variable. But with the diesels your looking at the oil will be the same due to the dpf filter on the exhaust so leaving it on variable would save some cash unless you want the shorter servicing intervals.
When I was looking at getting the leon fr the only thing my mate at vag technical group in Milton Keynes told me to avoid was the semi box with paddles.
We still have our old 03 tdci focus as we never went for a new car in the end. If i was going to get a new car now id go for a tdci focus again
DSG boxes have 2 clutches, not cheap if you own the thing when they need replacing.
VAG reliability is not all that the urban myths say it is. Not saying they are bad cars, but I don't think there is much difference between any marques mentioned here.
Mazda 6 sport estate 2.2 diesel (185bhp) - very fast but very much like a roller skate on 45 profile tyres, 18" wheels and stiff suspension. Can be a noisy ride depending on the road surface - especially with the rear seats down and the boot cover stowed away.
The sloping roof means access can sometimes be restricted with bigger loads.
Leather interior and most of the toys - at a very good price.
12500 service intervals - if you're buying second hand check whether it has had the timing chain sorted as this was a recall on some models.
Ordered the Leon fr+ on Friday, picking it up on March 1st.
The Mazda would of been a bargain, but the stereo tech let it down. Not touchscreen and iPod control is £330 from a dealer from a quick call. My mum has the 3 with the same engine and it is good fun.
That's a really nice colour and a very nice looking car. I had the Mk1 Cupra R and it was without doubt the best everyday I've owned and/or driven. The build quality was excellent, as good as VW, and SEAT really do know how to give you more bang for your buck. Liking those wheels on yours
