Yes
I had a mate ask me yesterday if SLR lenses would fit/work on a DSLR body?

The answer to that question starts off with "yes", progresses through "maybe" and ends up with "no".

You need to be a little more specific with manufacturer and mount type.

Generally, if they are both Canon EOS systems then yes, Nikon it probably depends on a lot of complex letters, but if it is a D40/50/60 it will not autofocus...

Doh, too slow at typing...

**D50 should not be in the group above, Nikons are soooo confusing**

Bob - My bad fella, it's early.

I'm guessing he was talking about Canon, as he was interested in mine when it comes to sell it. As for the mount type, i've no idea mate, i'm not clued up on SLR's.

Talking Canon then....

Canon's own EOS mount lenses (EF series) should be fine. Third party lenses (Sigma, Tokina etc) will physically fit but may not be compatible with the aperture and focus control although some can be re-chipped.

Canon's FD series lenses won't fit.

Why wouldt the autofocus not work on a D50? It has an internal motor drive.

So, if he's got SLR EF mount lenses, they'll work on my camera, auto focus etc will all be as normal?

Yes, if they're Canon's own. Sigma, Tokina and Tamron may not....depends on the age.
