I have just bought a Nikon D80 with 18-135mm kit lens this is my first DSLR camera.
Have had a bit of a read around the forum, alot of info to take in, at the moment im just playing about with the D80 but want to learn the ins and outs and produce good quality pictures.
Will the kit lens be ok or do i need another lens have seen loads on eBay but not really sure what to look for.
Have seen Nikon, Sigma, Cosina lens upto 300mm most of these are around £100 are they any good.
Im sure i'll be asking loads more questions over the next few months thanks for your help in advance.

My advice would be to get used to what you have at the moment. It all depends on what you want to take photos mainly of as to which lens to go for next before rushing out and purchasing something thats not suitable.

This Nikon site may be useful, check out the menu on the left of the opening picture

Hi Dasco, the subjects of your shots will dictate what lenses would be best for the purpose. I see you have listed portrature, landscape and wildlife as your 3 main interests. Unfortunately in the main each of these subjects will benefit from a particular type of lens.

For portraits a fast prime lens like the 50mm or an 85mm is a popular choice. Landscape lens of coice is often a wide angle lens from around the 10-22mm range and for Wildlife I would really reccomend something very long 400mm or greater.

None of these rules are set in stone however as many wildlife pics have been shot on smaller lenses and many fine landscape shots have been done with longer lenses. If you have a tog buddy near you with some different lenses it's definitely worth asking for a wee shot of them to try them out and see the differing effects and limitations of each one for a particular purpose.

So how much can i do with my Nikon 18-135mm kit lens and what sort of results can i expect, or am i better to sell that and buy three separate lens as mentioned above.
