Lenses to match a D3

It isn't the body on the list that I would think about - it is that 14mm zoom.

It is a cracking lens, but VERY heavy, and not well balanced either. All the weight is in the front, even on the 3 it is not as easy to handle. I tried one and then stuck with the old 17-35 that it would have replaced.

The 17-35 may not be as sharp, but I have had clients use exhibition prints to 4m from it, so it can't be that bad! The difference between the two is only at the very wide end - how often would you use those few extra degrees? In PJ, maybe it is important squashed in a rat pack scrum, but if you are shooting on your own, could you step back one pace? You have just gained those couple of degrees of coverage, but with less distortion. - Oh, and it is MUCH lighter too, both on the front of the body and on your wallet, AND it has a 77mm filter thread!
 
I totally agree with your summary of the 14-24 and 17-35 differentials.

I REALLY liked the 14-24 but on a D3, 17mm is already.. well 17mm..which is w-i-d-e anyhow.

One of the best optical switch-a-roos I ever made was moving from a 14-24 to 17-35.

I reckon I have about £2000 worth of Sony/Minolta lenses which didn't cost me much more than what I could sell them for.

I can, however, appreciate that there are many far better photographers than me that would love to have that gear and would not be able to afford it.

photographys a great hobby thats less troublesome to others than some things you could spend your money on...

enjoy the debate on what to buy then enjoy useing your equipment :thumbs:
 
of course i maybe regarded as behind the times the longest lens i have is a original nikon 70-210 f4 that i bought of doug

its not to heavy and i used the full range on the nature reserve yesterday

from close up on plants to birds miles away and then the moon when i returned home

it has a good reputation [well ken likes it :thinking:]

So, unfortunately the possibility of a hefty discount on the D3 and lenses didn't happen. It looks like I'll hang back and wait to see what Sony do next. I'm hoping for a 12 Megapixel full frame with D3/D700 noise profile and the HD video recording like the 5D mkII.

i changed my mind, your only moral option is to buy me a d3 with a 12-24 and 2 sb 900s, you can bring it to me today.
