Im thinking of buying an olympus e410 but dont know how many lenses are available for it. Are there any compatible lenses which are not made by olympus, as these all seem expensive?

Thanks

An excellent choice if I may say so dsattaur, I have an e410 myself and love it. As for lenses, the choice is a bit limited compared to Canon or Nikon but don't under estimate what the kit lenses are capable of. I'm sure theMusicMan will be along later to offer you more advice. One third party manufacturer is Sigma so it might be worth looking at their website http://www.sigma-imaging-uk.com/lenses/index.htm (they'll quote Olympus compatible lenses as 'four thirds' fit)

Hi dsattaur - welcome to tp.

Though there are not as many lenses available for Olympus 4/3 mount as for Canon and Nikon camera, there are still nonetheless many quality lenses available. In fact, many of the Zuiko lenses are considered very good quality. Have a look on this site http://www.four-thirds.org/en/products/lens.html for descriptions and specs on these lenses, and also have a look on here [talkphotography] for some second hand lenses that may be for sale.

There are often many superb lenses for sale on here too. I am looking at the 11-60mm beastie! E-3 for me first though ;)

Once you have decided what lenses you need, you must also contact Kerso - a member on here who supplies cameras and lenses at superb prices. I have purchased many items lenses from him and am about to purchase another E-510 body for my daughter for Christmas as his price is so goo AND Olympus are offering £100 cashback on this camera. You should contact Ian for a price on the E-410 to see if it is better than where you have seen it for sale.

Good luck with the purchase, you're getting a lot of camera for your buck with the E-410.

EDIT: see the post above here which was made as I posted this ^ - I must be sooo pro Oly eh!! :)) Nice one Steve

Hello dsattuar,

As musicman says there are some superb lenses available for Oly DSLR and the 2 kit lens option provides excellent bang per buck if your just starting out. I used 14-45 and 45-150 kit lenses for nearly the first year of having an E1 and they have delivered razor sharp images. I recently got a 14-54 at a good price on fleabay about £100 cheaper than the shops and this lens is nothing short of superb. Its glued to my E1!

I have handled a 410 and 510 and both are excellent cameras, I think if I was choosing I would go for 510 for the IS option. Must admit to being very pro Olympus as I grew up with OM systems and their cameras always seem to have the wow factor I never found with the others.

Good luck

I switched to Olympus when I went digital because they offer very compact and usable cameras. Its well worth picking one up and trying it in a shop for a few minutes.

As the other posters have said, there is a selection of lenses to cover more or less all eventualities, the quality ones do cost the same as Canon or Nikon pro lenses of course. However their kit lenses are generally excellent and if you buy as part of a 2 lens bundle they are outstanding value for money. You won't get a third party lens cheaper!

There are down sides, high ISO isn't a strong point and manual focusing is not as tactile as on some other brands, but overall they are just great cameras.

Yup, agree with everything that's been said thus far. All camera systems have their strengths and weaknesses, but if you're going for Olympus feel free to ignore anyone who tell you... 'you are buying into a system, not a camera, so ensure the camera system you buy will accommodate your future requirements'. I don't know a camera system that doesn't.
