I have been lucky enough to pick up a Nikkormat FT2 for silly money, can any users of such kit advise about lenses because it is non AI.Am I correct in thinking that any lens with the external metering bayonet will work on this camera

yep,as well as taking non-ai it will take Ai and Ais lenses too

if you dont want to spend a lot

consider the Nikon E series

the IQ is good regardless that they have a rep of being a cheap 'cousin'.....:D

all Series E lenses have AI-S coating

Yep, I agree with John, the E series lenses are very reasonably priced and the IQ is excellent. I had the 35mm f2.5 and 50mm f1.8 and was very please with both of them.

guessing here...wont a f3.5 give a dark viewfinder...?

the Series E 50/1.8 i have is a lovely lens circa £25 IIRC

also have a 50mm 1.8 Ai but costs a bit more..

not forgetting the 100mm seriesE too.read ken rockwells review of it.its pin sharp and a bargin,i know, i have one and at around £60 squids its not far away from the 105mm f2.5 Ai in IQ

By the way 1963 was the date the 43-86mm zoom was introduced, I could not afford one then and had a superb 50mm f2 Nikkor, ok f2 but a great lens.
