I am looking for a lens to allow for general picture taking ie an 18-250mm lens to allow for longrange family shots as well as close up, I am also after a wide angle lens for my studio work where I work on cars. I do not want to spend silly money as I have only had my SLR a week and am still getting to terms with it. Any help would be great.
Many thanks

You're probably best sticking with the 18-55VR and 55-200VR (kit lenses) to start with. They're lightweight and you need to pay a surprising amount to get significantly better.

For wide-angles, there are a growing number -- but if you're looking to keep the cost down you might look at a Sigma 10-20 HSM.

You could probably pick all the above up (lightly) used relatively cheaply.

+1 for the 18-55 and 55-200 combo. I used to have these and the quality was very impressive for the cost.

+1 for the Sigma 10-20mm too, its a good lens and will AF on your D40.

The Sigma 10-20 is a great lens as is the kit lens to be honest.

If you've got £170, buy the Tamron 18-200. Not as good as Nikkor glass, but a fraction of the cost. It's got a good zoom range and with the 1.5 crop factor on the D40, you'll actually have 300mm zoom.

Used one on my D40 and now use it on my D90, takes an excellent picture.

I have the Tamron and it is a good lens, as I wanted an all rounder. Managed to get a mis described one off ebay for a £100. Will post a pic when I can. Now hankering for a AFS 35mm!

Do consider the lack of VR/ image stabilisation on the Tamron -- this can make quite a difference at the long end. (might be worth trying in a shop to see how you get on)

The AFS 35 is a nice lens and would be a great addition.
