Hi All,

Was thinking of upgrading the above camera, until advise from here steered me in the right direction, so I am now loking to upgrade standard lens but need some help choosing which to go for.

I am after a better general purpose lens so was thinking of a Canon 17-85, 17-135 EF USM IS. Or a Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5 DC Macro OS.
I'm thinking the Sigma is a little faster as I often shoot in poor light.
I also try to take pics of koi carp and this would take presidence for choice [shooting into water fron 5' to 10' which can be a challenge-for me ]
And possibly a 'nifty fifty' as you call them if they might be a benefit.

The Other lens would be for wildlife/sports so I have been looking at a Canon EF 70-300 f4-5.6 IS USM or the Sigma f4-5.6 DG OS.

Any thoughts on these lenses [or others that I have overlooked] would be greatly appreciated.

Two other small queries. Are the 'L' series lenses compatable with my camera, or the lenses I have mention compatable with a full frame camera [5D?] Just thinking of the future if I do upgrade.

What is the difference between EF and EFS lenses ?

Many Thanks

Well, if you're shooting into water, get yourself a circular polarizer to get rid of the surface reflection; it makes a huge difference!

Not sure about the lenses - you can't got wrong with a nifty-fifty, but with a polarizer on and using in low light, I'd imagine there'd be quite a lot of vignetting because you'd have to be using it wide open.

EF & EFS are slightly different fittings however, they both fit the 400D. If you were to upgrade your body, the EFS lenses may not always be compatable. L lenses are compatable with the 400D and have more glass and are pro lenses. Well worth considering should you decide to upgrade your camera body.

To the OP, ref the above, L lenses are very good, but very expensive!!!! EFS lenses will probably be fine for you and any further body upgrades you do, unless you want to go full frame, as full frame bodies can only take EF lenses. xxxD, xxD and the 7D are all compatible with EFS lenses so you can still do some very decent body upgrades and carry on using the EFS lenses.

If you mean the 18-135, its a very good general purpose lens and has IS, and the 70-300 IS USM is also very good. You may be able to get good deals on both, especially 2nd hand.

I've had the Tamron 70-300 and the Canon 70-300 f4/5.6 IS USM and now have the Canon 100-400L as I wanted a bit more reach....

The Canon 70-300 is an absolutely cracking lens and was very happy with the shots I took with it but the 100-400 is something else, I have noly had the chance to use it once but looking at the images I managed to take I love it.

As said the EF lenses and (I believe) all the L glass will fit on the EF mounts so if you do upgrade your camera in the future you won't have to worry about needing to replace a load of lenses which could prove to be an expensive option unless you upgrade to a 7D which also supports both EF & EF-S

...or 40D, 50D and their successors etc etc which are also very worthy upgrades.
