I have a canon 500d and I was wondering what lens will be best for me.
I only take photos of my son and family and landscape ( occasionally)
Any help would be lovey *** to be honest I have no idea wen it comes to lenses

Welcome to Talk Photography

Maybe saying what price range you can afford would give some idea as to which lens to go for.

I have around £200.00 but dont mind spending that bit more. Thanks

I have the 18-55 kit lens and 55-250 IS MK 1 IS, the latter costing around £150 on Amazon. OK, not the best but good all rounders in the price range.

A prime Canon 50mm 1.8L for £90 - £100 brand new will give a view of 80mm on your camera which is at the shorter focal length for portraiture and will be sharper than an S zoom lens, cracking for the money.

I wouldn't rush into anything to be honest, I would probably go for the 50mm F1.8 as already said then I would save to get a bigger lens. If you buy cheap you will only end up being dissapointed long term. To be honest your probably better off keeping an eye out in the second hand department, although good lenses do hold there value quite well. A Sigma 24-70 F2.8 lens isn't bad at all, around £450 new so could probably get a good second hand one about £300.

Thanks guys.
Also I enjoy talking action shots of my son and animals is this also good for this or is there another lens u could recommend me looking into aswell?

I wouldn't bother with the 50mm F1.8 mk 2, mine came apart after only 4 months of use.

...and mines still like new after 5 years of hard use.

You know the 50mm f/1.8 isnt an L lens dont you :)

BTW this is in general photo sharing! You'd get more replies in the equipment section where it should have been posted !

:)

Maybe the mods can merge this with your new thread in the Equipment section?

I'd go for a lens in the 17 - 50 zoom range. I have a Tamron 17-50 2.8 and it's a little cracker. Purchased second hand from a TP member. This will give you a zoom range that will be good for both landscape and portrait photography.

I went to Italy last year and broke my 18 - 200 zoom on first day, leaving me with a 50 mm prime as my widest angle lens found this very limiting as on a crop sensor camera it is slightly telephoto.

The 50 used to be the standard lens in 35 mm (or full frame digital sensor) where it gives the closest perspective to what the eye actually see's, dont know why it's so popular on crop sensor camera's.

I use a 24 - 70 for my dog's and action shots

I have both of these lenses and I'm happy enough with both. The 55-250mm is great for grabbing pet action shots. I've caught some funny ones of the dog with mine as the dog is bounding back!

50mm 1.8 is a great lens for the money too. Especially for portraits. Sharper than the above lenses but you're obviously limited with no zoom.

I also have the Tamron 17-50 as my main lens, and can echo the sentiments above. A second hand example should see you right. I wouldn't limit myself to a prime as my only lens - I have a nifty fifty as well, but the Tamron gets far more use.
