lens upgrade

Hi,
Advice required please, i am looking to upgrade my standard zoom lens the nikon 18-105mm, to possibly the nikon 16-85mm dx lens, would this be a genuine upgrade in all round quality, or do you have any other suggestions?

Personally I'd go for a constant aperture f2.8, but if you do that you'll probably have a shorter zoom range. Might be worth thinking about though.

Im in the same sort of boat, looking to replace my 18-55 kit lens. Am considering Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX DC OS HSM Lens. Any thoughts on this anyone?
