Hey all, I am looking to upgrade my canon 17-85mm is usm which I use on my eos 60d.

I currently have it along with

Canon 70-200 f/4L usm
Canon 50mm f/1.8
Tamron 70-300 (which I have not used in around a year)

Thoughts appreciated, basically just looking for better IQ

The best direct upgrade for the 17-85, given that you're on a crop body, is the 15-85, which is regarded as very sharp. Sell off the 17-85 and the Tamron, and you won't have to put too much money in (maybe £100-£150).

If you can live without the 55-70 range and can afford to put a couple of hundred more in, the 17-55 f2.8 is regarded as one of the best lenses in the EF-S range.

I've got the 15-85 and would very much recommend it, but the 17-55 is a small step up IQ wise, and is significantly faster (f2.8 vs f3.5-5.6). Speed probably isn't important to you though, if you're just looking for better IQ.

Thanks for the reply, cash is not really too much of an issue, how does the 15-85 stack up against L series glass? The reviews I have read so far look promising!

The problem you have with L series is the focal length. You either have a compromise at the short end (they only go as low as 24mm) or at the long end where they go to 35-40mm. Unless you think you are going full frame at some point, I'd go EF-S at this sort of focal length. That basically leaves you the 17-55 IS, 15-85 IS or Tamron 17-50 non VC and possibly one of the Sigmas. I'd choose out of those based on need/want for 2.8 vs flexibility of zoom range.

It seems to stack up well against the 17-55 which most claim is L level glass judging by this bit of work: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-S-15-85mm-f-3.5-5.6-IS-USM-Lens-Comparisons.aspx

The 15-85mm is an excellent lens to walk around with

If money's not an issue then go for the canon 17-55 is. Equivalent focal length of the 24-70L on full frame.

canon 17-55 f2.8 is the one most buy if they have the money.

Other options are:

Tamron 17-50
Canon 15-85

Or if you realy want L glass and dont mind losing some wide end range the canon 24-105 is also loved by many.

What do you take photos of? Do you need f2.8?

The Tamron 17-50 non vc is very sharp its great value too, do a search on here and you will find load of comments.

The canon 17-55 is a little better as it has IS and better focus. but its two and half times more exspensive.

Both will give you great IQ.
