Hi all....
I’m looking to buy a new lens, I currently have the kit lens which is a 18-55mm len. I’ve been shoots things such as landscape cityscape a few protraits and some close ups. I feel some limitations I have are with close-ups and dof not being as sharp as I’d like it to be. I was recommended the Tamron 18x2700 by a man in Jessops as a general lens however I’m not sure this is suitable to my needs as I’m not a big zoomer at the moment. I’ve been looking at the 35mm 1.8g and the 50mm however I’m still not sure if these Are good lens for what I am looking for. Thank you in advance

I've no real experience with the tamron 18-270 ... but as it is a so called super zoom I am fairly confident that it will be one compromise after another so I'd avoid it.

The 35mm dx f1.8 is a terrific lens at a bargain price, so worth considering. For close up work a dedicated macro lens may be worthwhile, unless by closeup you mean things like head shots, in which case the 50 may well be a good choice. Also worth thinking about the tamron or sigma 17-50 f2.8 lenses, both are good.

For example I tried taking a picture of a coin quite close so you could see the details on the coin and although it turn out very good and I was happy with And I achieved what I was trying to do I feel my kit lens just didn’t cut it, maybe for those kinds of shots I do need a Macro lens. Would a 35mm be good for landscape and cityscape?

In reality it won't be much different to your kit lens, better image quality yes but 35mm is 35mm and for landscape you're unlikely to be shooting at wide apertures (e.g. f/1.8).

Set your kit lens to 35mm and see if that would suit your requirements.

For the close ups you could get a Raynox DCR-250 to use with your kit lens at the 55mm end.

keep the kit lens, get a macro lens for up close and a wide zoom like 10-18mm or whatever for landscape and cityscape.

that could be expensive so you have to research what is in your budget

Tokina wide lenses are good and so are the sigma. I owned a sigma 10-20mm and it was great. A big piece of front glass though (77mm IIRC)

If you want a portait lens you need to be looking at a 50 or 85mm prime really.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking landscape = wide angle, generally it doesn't it just equals small stuff in the frame.

Only if you don’t frame it right ;):p

OP what do you mean about DOF not being very sharp. DOF and sharpness are two different things.

Yes sorry I mean the dof wasn’t as smooth as I’d like it to be and the coin wasn’t as sharp. Okay so maybe it’s three different kind of lens I’m looking for? Iv also been recommended keeping my kit lens and also getting a Nikon 35mm 1.8g dx lens. What do you guys think?

I have the 35 f1.8 and it's fantastic - cheap and sharp. Great for separating your subject from the background. I also have the 16-80 f2.8-4 so you might think I wouldn't need the 35 but they are for different things really..

I'd keep the kit lens and add the 35 as you suggest
